Parents of boys nine to twelve are invited to bring their sons to a Shafter Cub Pack meeting next Wednesday at 8 P M in the American Legion hall announced by Ted K Cub committee chairman. Only boys brought to the first Pack meeting by their parents will be accepted for membership.
Margaret Bowman, public health nurse, says child health conferences will be held the second Wednesday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. by appointment in the county building in Shafter. A conference on Oct 13 had 15 attendees. smallpox, whooping cough, and diphtheria immunizations were administered under Dr Gaede with Bowman and Mrs Glenn Nay assisting.
A shortage of iron and steel scrap prompts a national second scrap drive with the Shafter Salvage Committee launching a Scrap Bank beside the General Petroleum yard. Hi Y Club volunteers plan a November 5 pickup to aid ranchers in supplying War Scrap, led by Harvey Neuman with advisor James Wilson.
The Shafter Wasco irrigation debate centers on completing the Friant Kern Canal to move surplus San Joaquin River water to Kern and Tulare counties. War needs push for wartime canal completion, with calls for urgent action by landowners to extend delivery to Kern River and avoid prohibitive costs. Rolland Curran of the Central Valley Project Association invites letters urging construction south to Kern River.
In Shafter area a labor shortage may push teachers and students into cotton work. Farm Labor Office manager Joe Hunt notes Mexican National workers have moved elsewhere. Gins show about half the cotton picked compared with last year, possibly due to late season.
Shafter High School Generals, still inexperienced in inter-school play, sharpen offensive tactics for a rematch with Wasco High School on November 6 at Wasco. Despite Wasco leading in yardage 157 to 61, Shafter penetrated Wasco’s 20 yard line three times to Wasco’s two, with Palomo and Steele standout on offense and Neuman and Mettler shining on defense.
John Lawrence Baughman a former Shafter business and civic leader and a recent U S Merchant Marine member died Tuesday at a Navy hospital in San Francisco. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a m from the Visalia Catholic church with Hadley Funeral Parlor in charge. He originated Shafter Halloween parades and was a charter Shafter Kiwanis member and Eagles lodge member. Survived by widow Sylvia and two daughters Donna Mae and Zella Marie, along with his parents, two brothers and a sister. Pallbearers include J L Hill Leonard Gaede Arnold Hefley Joe Frizzell Wallace Weyand Abe Neufeld.
Allen Gorsching son of Mr and Mrs P J Gorsching is home on furlough He is stationed at Waycross Ga and is in the Air Corps Service Squadron He was formerly stationed at Columbia Se Air cargo transport accounted for more than 3 000 000 pounds of American imports during the second quarter of 1943.
War Ration Book 4 will be issued at the Richland cafeteria next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday October 25 26 and 27 from 3 to 8 o'clock. One person may obtain Book 4 for all family members at the same address. Each Book 3 must be presented with Book 4 and Book 3 will be returned with Book 4. Bring War Book 3 when applying and blanks will be given to registrants.

Plans for the big annual Halloween parade scheduled for the evening of Nov 1 are complete. Earl Weil secretary of Shaf ter Kiwanis Club reports the update after a St Kiwanis meeting at Cafe Neuman. President Herb Schirmer recently returned from a trip to St Louis.
Farmers are reminded that December 18, 1943, is the deadline for income tax declarations. Accountants in the Shafter area are actively preparing income tax forms.
Florence Porter of Bakersfield told Shafter Rotary Club that last year California lost fourteen million dollars in food crops due to labor shortages. She credited foresight and Mexican national imports with eliminating losses this year, noting 30 000 Mexicans entered the U S with California receiving about half. She praised schools for language help and reported harvest labor by student workers 25 percent, Mexican nationals 15 percent, and regular farm labor 60 percent.
Mrs Darold Wood of Shafter reported her car stolen in Bakersfield after a month with no lead. Bakersfield police recovered the vehicle in storage, revealing the thief had driven it away and collided with another car before fleeing.
Shafter Business Men's Association backed immediate Friant-Kern Canal construction from Friant dam to the Kern river. The group urged War Production Board to allocate materials, citing War Food Administration pressure and the need to boost Kern county wartime food production. Central Valley Association emphasized affordable water pricing for farmers. A. R. Duehren joined irrigation leaders at the county Chamber of Commerce meeting.
R B Hood, a representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will speak to the Shafter Rotary Club next Tuesday at noon according to Harvey Neu.
Seed potatoes for the coming season in Shafter are arriving in earnest. Santa Fe Agent Edward Gamegan reports over a hundred rail cars have reached local depots in recent days. Growers store seed in warehouses and on Race Street as storage limits bite.
The Associated Company completes erection of a derrick and boilers at a wildcat well on the Schnidt property, aiming to start drilling next week. Vedder oil sands may be reached at 12 000 feet or more following high gravity oil discoveries in nearby Rio Bravo and Shafter fields. The well is on a community lease with many local owners participating. Michigan leads in war contracts, California second, New York third.
