Rabies Still Found In Shafter

A second rabies case occurred in Shafter over the weekend. The county health officer Dr Joe Smith reported a collie owned by Charles Hitchock showed rabies symptoms last Thursday. The dog was killed and its head sent to Berkeley for testing. The family cat, bitten by the dog, was also destroyed under quarantine. Citizens are urged to keep pets confined and report dog bites promptly. The only effective prevention for humans is immediate wound treatment with fuming nitric followed by limewater and vaccination if the dog proves rabid.
