County Clerk F E Smith certified Shafter's incorporation petition as sufficient. The board of supervisors will set a hearing time for protests, likely 30 days before formal hearing. If no protests or protests are overruled, the election is called, probably at least 90 days before voters decide.
Oil men report a new Superior producer on Kern County Land holdings flowing nearly 1500 barrels daily of 31 gravity oil from a deep Kern field extension. The well at 7899 feet began producing before casing perforation completed, with potential output far above current production.
The Camarillo lima bean harvest closed last week as good weather aided quick handling of the beans.
The rapid progress of Shafter continues with the dedication of the new First Mennonite church on the Wall tract at 10 o clock. Rev Gustav Frey will sermonize with guest speakers Rev H J Krehbiel and Rev Mr Longwalter from Reedley. Over 700 people expected from Shafter Reedley and Paso Robles for a day long ceremony and luncheon at noon.
Miss Chatburn, granddaughter of E G Kolbenstetter, signed with MGM as star in Bad Guy after shocks of screen tests. She credits influence and luck in a 75 25 ratio to ability, recalls William Powell guidance on diction, Marion Gering coaching, and says she was named the nation’s most beautiful girl by McClelland Barclay.
Supervisor Stanley Abel reports crews are at work on the Belridge end of Lerdo highway. A joint road district may be formed to fund a bridge for the new highway, with a serviceable crossing planned regardless. The Taft Corcoran road through Shafter is also under consideration, with a Taft Wasco Corcoran Hanford Shafter meeting tentatively set for October 26 in Corcoran.
California tops the nation for yield per acre at 526 pounds with Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri, and Mississippi rounding the top five. Yet California ranks ninth in total 1938 baleage at about 675,000 bales, while New Mexico leads in condition with 89 percent and an estimated 130,000 bales.
Union Oil tapped Vedder sand in its Shafter wildcat and Superior Oil prepared for competitive drilling in the Greeley area. Foundations poured for Krause No 1 on the east edge of Greeley field in section 21 29-26, marking Kern County Land Company property boundary with smaller holdings.
Jim Camp, son of Mr and Mrs Sol Camp, makes a rapid rise in the local scene with strong parental backing and early competitive success. He draws attention from coaches and peers as he progresses through junior events.
The fourth annual Kern county cotton picking contest, October 272 at the Pouse ranch near Shafter, offers 300 in prizes for pickers with 600 pounds or more in a day. Prizes total 140 with 125 to first and 10 to sixth, plus 90 cents per 100 pounds for all cotton picked.
Residential remodeling and real estate transfers mark Shafter’s rapid expansion. A. R. Neufeld nears completion on Lerdo road east of the Santa Fe tracks, with occupancy planned for Mr. and Mrs. Neufeld. Harvey Gaede’s Chan nen son tract home gains additions worth several hundred dollars in improvements. J. N. Westbrook of Sil Ranch bought a Marengo street home for rental, as other residences approach completion.
Herbert Neuman and Walter Kirschenmann served as Shatter delegates to the San Joaquin Valley FFA meeting in Fresno during the past weekend. The convention approved changing the dates of the annual FFA conference from May to August 1938 at San Luis Obispo.
Al bert Harder a 24 year old Shafter rider narrowly escaped death when his motorcycle collided with Henry J. Brandt s Rio Bravo car at Tulare and Poplar streets. Brandt escaped serious injury as his car rolled twice. Harder suffered facial fractures and deep lacerations and was taken to Bakersfield hospital by Janzen ambulance after bystanders dragged him clear before the bike exploded.
Sugar beets gain ground as plantings increase beyond last season. Phil Channeson and James Camp led efforts with C. G. Haycock of the American Company overseeing operations from Oxnard. Planting runs January to mid February with contracts for next season being signed. Local yields reach up to 20 tons per acre at about 7 to 8 dollars per ton. seed cost roughly three dollars per acre and total production around 50 dollars per acre. Curly top disease no longer fears growers due to resistant seed.
Shafter residents toured the first Mobile Hospital of the California Forestry Service Medical Corps. The furnished trailer contains medicines and surgical tools and can be moved quickly to disaster sites. Additional units will be stationed at regional points statewide.
The twin daughters of Mr and Mrs Emil Stoller were baptized Sunday at the Lutheran church in Bakersfield. Rev Louis A Kueffner christened La vonne Joan and Lavelle Ann with godparents Mr and Mrs Edward Stoller of Visalia.
Tehachapi High School student Milton Myers, 15, died Friday from a kidney injury suffered during a scrimmage a week earlier. Myers, a Hilltoppers football standout, was kicked in the back during practice as condolences were prepared. The report also details a deep Union Oil test near Shafter, aiming to prove Vedder sand production and potential new oil fields in Kern County.
Captain Roy Galyen of the Kern division of the state highway patrol said reckless driving has claimed 15 lives in 18 days in Kern County. He warned at the rate of October deaths could set a new all time high and promised a continued crackdown on all serious traffic law violations.
Cotton ginned at Shafter's three gins passed 6000 this week and reached 6410 bales by 6 this morning. The year to date figure trails last year but ginnings are expected to continue at a similar pace.
Residential construction on Riverside Drive southwest of town advances quickly with two homes nearing completion. Both are slated for rental use. one by C. C. Duerksen and the other by P. J. Buller.
The Kern County Congregational Association will hold its next annual meeting in Shafter in October 1938. A special feature from the east will be presented. The invitation to the Kern congregants is extended by Rev. Alfred Chandler on behalf of the local congregation.
