Union Oil begins work on the 52-34 location in Section 24 28-25 with a new crew to drill two projects in Shafter field. A sump was completed at 52-34 and a derrick mounted as crews prepare to spud the well likely before late next week.
Los Angeles special agent Austin D. Horn of the FBI spoke at the Shafter Rotary Club meeting at Cafe Neuman detailing the bureau’s work and presenting a film You Cant Get Away With That. He noted FBI prominence after Prohibition repeal and cited kidnapping case stats and court conviction rates.
Superior Oil reports ongoing activity in the Shafter field with two crews. Weber No. 1 reached 9900 feet and Smith No. 1 reached 6200 feet after a week of drilling.
Kern County district attorney Tom Scott announced plans to present to the Grand Jury a body of evidence on illegal voter registration and voting. He cites complaints of violations, notes stem from out-of-state residents registering before 90 days in California, and says indictments will be sought for willful registration fraud and perjury with prison terms. The investigations target sections of the penal code and will be presented at the Grand Jury meeting on October 26.
A fire in a fuse and switch control box at the Greeley lease of Standard Oil in Section 20, 29-26, was extinguished Friday afternoon by Shafter fire crew. Loss estimated at 400 dollars though equipment in a nearby building worth about 2,000 dollars was saved. The blaze was reported at 4 25 p m. Two Bakersfield fire trucks came but were not required.
Cotton gins in the area turned out 1459 bales this week to push the season total to 3731 bales. D O Moore gin reached 1438 bales, Shafter Wasco 1200, Camp West Lowe 1093. Kern county ginning before Oct 1 totaled 10722 bales, up from 4102 in 1938.
Kern River Baptist Young People's association holds a rally and banquet tomorrow at the Mennonite Brethren church in Shafter. About 125 attendees are expected with Rev. Harold I. Proppe as speaker and Lawrence Kattenhorn as toastmaster. delegations from Taft Bakersfield Wasco and Buttonwillow present.
A Shafter M B church delegation travels to a general conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches of North America in Corn, Oklahoma. About 115 churches will be represented. Rev A H Unruh of Winkler Manitoba chairs the gathering. topics include African mission entry and Tabor College continuance.
Local Boy Scout committee meets this evening at the Legion hall in Shafter to discuss expanding Scout work. Kern county Scout executive C. E. Bartlett will assist, with attendees including Dr. Jack Lighthill Orvin Mettler Dr. L. H. McGrane A P Channeson J B Henderson J W Frizzell Glenn C Nay and W H Hitchcock.
A committee of local and county growers met at the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District to draft a constitution for a seed potato grower's association. John Snyder of the University of California will prepare a tentative by-laws and plans for a mass meeting. The group aims to provide disease free seed potatoes annually through breeding and inspections, akin to blue labeled cotton seed production, with long term goals including staffing via federal or UC support.
The Shafter Kiwanis club will award cash prizes for first and second places in five divisions for a Hallowe'en parade on October 31. Participants meet 6 30 pm at the American Legion hall, travel California avenue to Five Corners and up Central to Santa Fe Way. All marching children receive favors.
Night school classes began at Shafter high school with 242 students enrolled. After one session 195 attended, principal Eugene Ford notes attendance is crucial due to state rules on dropping classes if enrollments fall below 15 for two consecutive meetings.
Last Thursday evening a large town turnout for the open house of Shafter high school’s new gymnasium and auditorium. Hundreds toured the interior guided by faculty while indoor games and refreshments occurred in the home economics room.
The Rio Bravo 4 H Club will meet at the school auditorium Friday evening. A business meeting will precede games and contests themed to Hallowe en. Joyce Haag Rose Huston and Rosalyn Sears lead the entertainment plan.
A testimonial dinner will honor W. H. Hitchcock, longtime Kern County chamber president, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wednesday Afternoon clubhouse Shafter. County chamber and Shafter Business Men's committee organize with Emory Gay Hoffman in charge. tickets are $1 and available at two drugstores and the Business Credit Service Bureau.
Superior court sessions in Bakersfield on the Shafter disincorporation matter were continued from Monday to a date in November.
The Shafter Athletic Association formed to run a city basketball league in the new high school gym with Harvey Gaede as president and Laurence Annis as treasurer. Plans call for a six to eight team league starting October 30 with games Monday and Thursday evenings and possible outside-team games. membership fee is 1.25 per player. Managers must file player lists by October 23.
Thirty eight head of livestock entered by Shafter Future Farmers will compete at the Los Angeles stock show October 28 to November 3. Entries include seven Hereford steers and four Duroc Jersey barrows by Alvin Roberson, plus other poland china and crossbred barrows by Ray Poston Louis Starrh Charles Harris Jim Bobst and Charles Sanger. The group is led by Art Johnson with Glenn O Nay announcing the shipments by truck on October 28.
Richland school board accepted a 65 passenger bus at a recent meeting at Richland school. The bus cost 4744.57 dollars. The board awarded a contract to F B Annis to plant lawn in front of and rear of the new Shafter school building on Lerdo road. Other routine matters were considered.
C L Johns head of the Pacific Aeronautical College of Los Angeles visited Shafter to discuss establishing an airport here. He outlined land needs for two runways 2500 by 300 feet and a hangar, noting favorable open country and year round flying conditions. Sidney Bernap accompanied Johns, piloting a Porterfield to Shafter for the luncheon with local business leaders.
General Petroleum’s Sullivan No. 1 well, outpost to the Greeley field, hit 11,190 feet Tuesday as crews probe whether a productive sand lies below. The well lies south of Shafter near a line between Shafter and Greeley fields, watched by local landholders. success could boost oil prospects in the area. G P officials expect production sand below 11,200 feet, final depth to be set by hole findings.
Darby Day and Jim Stone of Shafter were Thursday evening initiated into the Wasco Odd Fellows lodge at a Wasco meeting, followed by a social time. Frank Russell and G. W. were present.
