The Shafter Kiwanis Club hosts a Halloween Parade on Thursday October 31 at 7 p.m led by Parade chairman Arlie Feil. Richland-Lerdo PTA hosts a barbecue and car nival on Thursday October 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Richland Intermediate School with 30 booths and proceeds funding PTA programs. Senior Center in Shafter advertises an arts and crafts bake sale on Saturday October 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 505 Sunset Ave with $5 table rentals and baked goods donations due by October 18. Teen Challenge holds a Sunday October 20 11 a.m. service under the oak at the Green Hotel with 15,000 hours of local restoration work noted and refreshments after.

Year-round schooling eyed to meet RLSD growth needs
Richland Lerdo School District prepares for enrollment rise by creating five Future Housing Committee subcommittees. Each includes an administrator, board member, teacher, classified staff, parent, and community member to study interagency linkages year-round education curriculum financing and community interest. A 1995 96 new school is eyed to handle about 650 more students as enrollment nears 2378.

Missing SHS student abducted in Buttonwillow case remains unsolved
A 15 year old Shafter High School sophomore Yazmin Leon remains missing after an October 8 abduction at a Highway 58 Willow Street bus stop in Buttonwillow. Kern County Sheriff Richard Dixon identified two men involved and noted prior Mexico case linked to the suspect, with one suspect described as Hector Manuel Belroden Cardenas, 25, of Mexico in a border patrol style uniform. Police pursue leads with witnesses describing a second man and a third man in the vehicle.
