Shafter Community Notices Highlight Parades and Fundraisers

The Shafter Kiwanis Club hosts a Halloween Parade on Thursday October 31 at 7 p.m led by Parade chairman Arlie Feil. Richland-Lerdo PTA hosts a barbecue and car nival on Thursday October 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Richland Intermediate School with 30 booths and proceeds funding PTA programs. Senior Center in Shafter advertises an arts and crafts bake sale on Saturday October 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 505 Sunset Ave with $5 table rentals and baked goods donations due by October 18. Teen Challenge holds a Sunday October 20 11 a.m. service under the oak at the Green Hotel with 15,000 hours of local restoration work noted and refreshments after.

Veterans Group Meet In Bakersfield Saturday

Submarine veterans of WWII and their ladies will gather Saturday October 19 at the Chateau Basque at First and Union in Bakersfield for socializing and a program.

Six laid off at Frito Co in Kern plant

Six employees were laid off at Frito-Lay of Kern south of Shafter in a cost-cutting move. The local plant’s list of names was unavailable at press time though one worker had 19 years at the plant. The Shafter Press will publish full details next week.

Year-round schooling eyed to meet RLSD growth needs

Richland Lerdo School District prepares for enrollment rise by creating five Future Housing Committee subcommittees. Each includes an administrator, board member, teacher, classified staff, parent, and community member to study interagency linkages year-round education curriculum financing and community interest. A 1995 96 new school is eyed to handle about 650 more students as enrollment nears 2378.

Missing SHS student abducted in Buttonwillow case remains unsolved

A 15 year old Shafter High School sophomore Yazmin Leon remains missing after an October 8 abduction at a Highway 58 Willow Street bus stop in Buttonwillow. Kern County Sheriff Richard Dixon identified two men involved and noted prior Mexico case linked to the suspect, with one suspect described as Hector Manuel Belroden Cardenas, 25, of Mexico in a border patrol style uniform. Police pursue leads with witnesses describing a second man and a third man in the vehicle.

Red Ribbon Week planned by RLSD in Oct

Red Ribbon activities set for October 21 through 25 involve Richland Lerdo School District and PTA aiming to curb drug and alcohol use. Teachers will distribute red ribbons, students and staff will wear them all week, with Thumb Print Banner Day, a DARE presentation by Officer Edmiston and Kilo, and red dress and red food days scheduled.

Shafter Eyes Annexation Amid Growth and Concerns

The Shafter Planning Commission unanimously urged the city to pursue annexation toward Highway 99, expanding the area from 2.1 to 9.4 square miles. Residents voiced worries about city services, police and fire readiness, and potential tax changes, while officials noted the airport district would remain autonomous and tax increases require voter approval.
