Generals Roll Over McFarland 26-0 In Sierra League Clash
Shafter High School Generals dominated McFarland Cougars 26-0 in a Sierra League football game on Saturday. Midget Murray Evans sparked the attack with 13 points including a 4 yard TD and a 30 yard run, while Glenn Bender added the extra point and threw a failed pass on a later conversion. The Generals outgained the Cougars 310 to 98 yards and earned 17 first downs to McFarland’s nine as reserves saw action late in the game.

Two Flyers Die In Plane Crash Here
Li Thomas Bright 21 of Hope Arkansas and Aviation Cadet Albert F Owens 21 of Hopkins Missouri died when the aircraft on a routine formation flight crashed in a cotton field on the G W Watson ranch two miles southwest of Shafter. Both were stationed at Lerdo Army Air Training School. The accident happened at 1 30 in the afternoon during a three plane formation. The plane was completely wrecked and the cause could not be ascertained.

Lerdo Road Widening Work Started
Lerdo road widening into a four lane route from 99 highway to Sill wanch corner began this week as a county WPA project. A 50 foot strip was deeded by Kern County Land to the county, with a meeting planned to secure remaining land rights and set fair prices. Travel is increasing due to the Army Air Corps training school nearby and a federal housing project opposite the field.

Enlisted Men Dance Planned At Shafter Army School
A dance for enlisted men at the United States Army Air Corps Basic training school east of Shafter is being organized by the Wednesday Afternoon club. Invitations will go to 60 to 75 men via recreation officers and the men will ride Army trucks to Shafter and back. The club women will invite local girls, and WPA music will provide the entertainment. Similar dances occur in Bakersfield twice monthly, with future events planned locally.

Boy Scout Fall Jamboree Set For Shafter
The northern district Boy Scouts schedule a Shafter fall jamboree for October 25 announced by Leon Smith Troop 44 scout master. An opening parade is planned with representatives from county troops. Fire in Rest Room at Bergen Service Station Extinguished
A fire started in a waste basket in a rest room at the Bergen Service Station at Five Corners was extinguished last evening around 7 o clock with only minor damage. Local forestry crews and the Shafter Volunteer Fire Department answered the alarm. A large crowd gathered when the city siren sounded and about 80 percent of Shafter’s cars were drawn to the scene.
