Soldier Dies When Hit By Train Near Shafter
Robert Marion Carpenter twenty one, of Battalion H, 18th Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, was killed Sunday at nine when struck by a northbound Santa Fe freight train nine miles south of Shafter. Investigation by Constable Reily and deputies found Carpenter ran onto the tracks from behind blocks and died instantly. The body lay 133 yards from the collision before being moved. he wore civilian clothes and carried $1.25 and several IDs. Army officers and Fort Sill officials were notified. funeral arrangements are pending at Janzen Funeral Home.

A Tuesday evening fire at about 8 o clock destroyed a grocery store and the building at the corner of Santa Fe way and Mayor Jane. The building owner was H Kretchmer, loss $800. The stock belonged to O N Smith, leasee of the building, with grocery stock loss $1800, partly insured.

Kern County potato growers have built a substantial industry in twenty two years, producing 550 million pounds of Long White potatoes for markets from California to New York.
