SPOA seeks removal from lawsuit against City of Shafter

The Shafter City Council heard a report that the Shafter Police Officers Association SPOA wants out of a Kerr County legal action filed by David Kadel and others against the City of Shafter and other parties. Regadanz denied knowledge or support for the suit and called for immediate withdrawal. The panel discussed grand jury findings on SPD record disarray and approved several measures including utility rate increases, a new typewriter for the police, and six city benches with local ads.

Jury clears Shafter Police of wrongdoing in probe

The 1980 81 Grand Jury found no substantiated events or incidents warranting charges against the Shafter Police Department though possible court remedies loom for some victims. Foreman Spencer Lees cited inflammatory publicity and fear of influence as hampering the inquiry. Deputy DA Phil McNutt plans to refile misdemeanor assault charges against Officer Russell Carr after meetings with his lawyer.

Shafter Chamber Touts Fair Wins and Leadership Plans

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce met on October 10 1980 at the Shafter Motel to review the Kern County Fair display. They reported first place sweepstakes and the Peter Gilli Award, and presented certificates to four non members. A resolution supporting Don Roger's tax idea was approved for submission to the state chamber.

Shafter Historical Society outlines depot progress meeting

The Shafter Historical Society held its third general and first annual meeting at Santa Fe Depot on October 11, 1917. President Stan Wilson noted progress toward depot dedication, with new CETA funded positions for maintenance and an assistant curator, and urged members to attend a Commission meeting. Board members Dwayne Armstrong, Art Kadel, and Pat Bryant were elected unanimously. Nina Leigh resigned. A dinner honoring Commission members is planned for November 13.

Keep alleys clean as brush piling irks city ordinance

Shafter residents prune trees and stack brush in public alleys violating a city ordinance. Leaves and garden waste should not be piled until frost or heavy leaf fall. City crews will start leaf removal then. Annual brush cleanup begins about the first week of December, when all debris in alleys will be hauled away except construction debris. Property owners must remove construction waste themselves. violators may be cited. An official notice will appear when the city starts the annual cleanup.

Back to School Night at Shafter High

SHS hosts annual Back-to-School night on Tuesday October 21 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria offering pie and beverages. Evan Jones principal introduces new staff with Martha Novak SHS Patrons chair, then classroom visitations begin at 8 p.m. Parents invited to participate.

Police arrest two in Shafter lounge fight

Police responded to a fight at Graddy's Lounge on Central Avenue at 830 p m and arrested two Wasco men for fighting. Bertha Jesse and Angie Reyes, both of Shafter, were also arrested after Jesse allegedly threw a newspaper rack at an unidentified man. Two auto batteries were reported stolen last week from Terra Vista and Cross Street locations.
