Shafter Depot Becomes Shafter Museum at Dedication

The Shafter Depot was dedicated as the Shafter Museum on October 9 1982 after restoration by the Shafter Historical Society. Alisha Lewis unveiled the sign and Amtrak ran a special stop to honor the event as community officials and residents praised preservation efforts and local volunteers. The depot, moved to its site four blocks from its original location, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with a banquet and multiple notable attendees including Stan Wilson and George Dade.

Murder at Samarippas Bar shocks Wasco community

Lupe Gonzales, 37, was fatally shot outside Samarippas Bar on South Shafter Avenue in Shafter. Deputies arrived at 9:13 p.m. and Gonzales died at Kern Medical Center. Motive unknown, suspect named but not arrested. Bar cited as a recurring trouble spot, with ongoing sheriff investigations and limited staffing.

Rodriguez Park Council Hears Recreation Request

Rodriguez Park residents pressed for reinstating recreational activities at Rodriguez Park. A delegation read a statement to the City Council on Sept 27, asking city officials Police and the Parks and Recreation District to assist. A special committee of Cathy Prout and George Wise was formed to study renovations and report back with recommendations. The council also reviewed the 1981 82 city audit with CPA Ron Davis. An auction of surplus city property was approved for Oct 30. City Attorney stressed city property cannot be given away and must be sold.

Two fires destroy homes in Shafter area

Two large fires in Shafter damaged property and endangered residents. A home at 226 S Wall Street burned completely while contents worth about 12 000 were saved from the blaze. The second blaze on Stone Street caused several building and content losses totaling around 6 000. Vera Smart refused to evacuate to save her dog as responders worked to control the fires. The Grace Mann Lewis center near 219 E Highway was engulfed, with the response including City and County units and volunteers. Chief Bob Thompson reported the incident began at 9 29 p m and reached under control in about twelve minutes with damages exceeding 30 000 dollars.
