Harvest starts in Kern County with Shafter and Wasco processing plants handling about 30 percent of county cotton. Yield expected 1100 to 1200 pounds per acre up to 20 percent higher than last year, with prices $170 to $185 per cwt. Labor ample, gins busy, and growers aiming to pick before seasonal rains.
Shafter High School aims for a fourth straight win as the Generals travel to Burroughs High School after opening the year with victories over Arvin and Fowler and a 19-6 win over Lemoore. Herman Jones sparked the offense with multiple long runs and a key block, while Richard Warneke added the extra points.
The Seventh District of the California Congress of Parents and Teachers holds its first year meeting at Shafter High School October 18. Co hosts include Mrs Rolf Jacobsen and Mrs Jim Gloeckler with Superintendent Bruce Crawford and Principal Arthur H Johnson in attendance. Registration begins at 9 30 a m followed by a business session led by Mrs H L Klakoff and main speaker Mrs Russell Scott on parental roles in public schools. Fifteen members of the National Cotton and Cotton Seed Advisory committee will visit the Shafter Cotton Experiment Station on Tuesday. The trip, led by Ezra Taft Benson's appointees, aims to survey station work and includes a Kern county guns tour and a banquet at the Hacienda Motel. The three day inspection ends Wednesday in Bakersfield with hosts Russell Kennedy and Harry Baker. John H. Turner Jr., director of the Shafter station, says the visit honors the station and its staff.

Joseph M Sales, the former relief manager and lending officer at Bank of America's Shafter branch, has been promoted to assistant manager. He arrived in Shafter last August from the Chico district operation office and has a long banking and agriculture background including prior assistant manager at an Idaho bank and service as an agricultural statistician for the U S Department of Agriculture.
Shafter civic and business leaders heard county plan details on forming census tracts for the 1960 census. Don Crawford urged unanimous backing and offered county staff to handle the leg work as the plan would divide Shafter into a city tract and a three mile radius tract.
A speaker outlined two census methods the government uses to gather data. Census tracts provide detailed head counts and demographics while enumeration districts cover essential area data. Officials stressed 100 percent county support and noted California counties like Los Angeles have used tracts since 1910. The data will aid the city master growth plan and a Kern county civic leaders meeting schedule was announced.
Speculation rose after a flurry of activity at the abandoned South Shafter Labor Camp. Owners Movsesian and Parks of Wasco said no definite agreement has been reached on future use of the 40 acre tract.
A/2C James V. Wilson, son of Shafter High student mathematics instructor James Wilson and Shafter High School graduate, has been chosen Airman of the Month for September by leaders at Nellis Air Force Base. He was assigned to tower control duty in 1956 and has advanced to tower self control leader. He will compete for wingman of the month with a $25 prize plus a steak dinner, a voting seat on next month’s board, and a commendation letter added to his service record.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture reports a clean profit of 162.20 from its Kern County Fair exhibit. Secretary Robert Somers announced today that the exhibit, built by volunteers, won second prize in a committee category.
Parade chairman James Tucker reports a sharp rise in entries for the Shafter homecoming parade set for Saturday October 26 at 10 AM. At least 30 units are promised, with emphasis on old time displays such as antique cars and horse drawn carriages, plus color from bands majorettes and bugle corps. Several schools and organizations including American Legion Color Guard Bakersfield High drill team Wasco Union Elementary and the City of Delano are listed among participants. A Santa Fe diesel engine is highlighted as a parade feature.
The First Annual Shafter Homecoming on October 25 to 27 features a Hospitality House at Veterans Memorial Hall with coffee and doughnuts nightly sessions led by pioneer Shafter residents. The event also includes a parade barbecue back to church campaign and an alumni football game marking Shafter’s 45th birthday.
Ping-pong entries are now being accepted for the Shafter Homecoming tournament on October 26. Bill McCullough chairs the event and asks entrants to contact Kirby's shoe store. The four-part contest includes elementary, high school, adult, and father-son doubles, held during the barbecue sponsored by the American Legion in the park behind the Veterans Memorial Hall.
Shafter prepares for the 45th anniversary homecoming October 25 26 and 27 with E B Stringham hosting hospitality Judge Grant escorting the Pioneer queen Bill Arnold overseeing class reunions and T V Little parade marshal. Mayor Kirschenmann urges former residents to return while churches invite members and ministers to join. Coffee sessions at Veterans Memorial hall and a long parade October 26 precede the Legion barbecue behind the memorial hall.
Smiley Burnett announces merchants will play key roles in Shafter Homecoming events October 25 to 27 and a 45th birthday observance. Decorations arrive this week as twenty streamer lines cross Central avenue. A breakfast meeting October 19 at Veterans Memorial Hall will finalize plans for the city wide Appreciation Day sale on October 25.
Marlys Annehet, English instructor and chair of the faculty planning committee, announces a school night October fifteenth. A shortened class period of twelve minutes allows each parent to meet teachers and learn course aims. Dinner in the cafeteria runs 6 30 to 7 30 p m, lunch menu served, price sixty cents. If parents cannot attend the dinner, they are urged to participate in the evening program.
