The Shafter Fire Department, formed by volunteers and two paid engineers, reflecting its 1920 origins and 1913 district roots, began motorized service with a Ford truck later replaced by a Buick pump unit. Fire Prevention Week 1963, proclaimed by Mayor Harvey Gaede, urged prevention programs, inspections, and city support to reduce fire risk and insurance costs.
