Festival marks St Therese feast at Shafter church
St Therese's Church of Shafter held its annual St Therese Festival on Sunday October 5, a major parish fundraiser and a day of celebration. The festival honors Therese of Lisieux, known as The Little Flower, a nun and Doctor of the Church who died at 25. Pope John Paul II later named her the thirty third Doctor of the Church, youngest and among the first women to hold the title. devotion to St Therese has grown worldwide.

Inmate Assault Reported at Lerdo Pretrial Detention Facility
An unidentified 55 year old man was found with severe head injuries in his Lerdo Detention Facility cell around 9:00 p.m. Saturday. He was taken by ambulance to Kern Medical Center in critical condition. Deputies and detectives investigated. case is ongoing.

Shafter High senior Alyssa Hart won the Grand Champion Open Heifer at the 2014 Kern County Fair with a white Short Horn heifer born earlier that year. She weighed 584 pounds at purchase and 836 pounds at show, spending about 3000 to 3500 dollars on the animal, feed, and supplies.
