Shafter High marked Homecoming with a spirited rally and halftime festivities for the Generals. English teacher Jadene Watson was crowned Staff Queen and Math teacher Kevin Ellis the Staff King amid cheers, games, and music.
Deputies responded to Wasco on Poplar Avenue to a stabbing with two adult Hispanic male victims who were taken to Kern Medical Center. Two teens, ages 14 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and assault with a deadly weapon. Investigation ongoing.
Assemblymember Rudy Salas announced three of his local issue bills were signed and chaptered into law by Governor Brown. AB 1439 stops illegal gambling at internet cafes. AB 2546 gives the Kern County Board of Supervisors authority to create a Hospital Authority to manage Kern Medical Center. AB 1104 allows a dairy by product to be used in methane digesters for renewable energy.
Around Town announces a coed softball tourney for October 11, 2014 at Westside Park Wasco to benefit Christmas toys for needy children. Community food giveaway opens monthly at Shafter Christian Fellowship 632 James St for 150 families. Kern County Veterans Stand Down set for October 9 at Stramler Park 3805 Chester Ave with registration by September 26 at 1120 Golden State Ave. Transportation lines listed.
Students and community members gathered outside Shafter High on Thursday for See You at the Pole, a student led prayer event with music and refreshments. Organizers highlight rights to free speech and prayer on campus, noting teachers and staff may attend as supporters.
