The piece extols National Newspaper Week and the free press as a bulwark of liberty. It credits wartime newspapers for informing and rallying the home front, noting manpower and supply hurdles but praising a rebirth of American journalism guiding postwar public life.
The relief instruction plan for grade school children has been delayed to allow a more complete setup. The program now should begin by late October or early November at the latest. A letter to parents will explain the plan and request cooperation as parental consent is essential for the religious instruction.
Shafter's farm labor office at 101 Central Avenue, run by Joe Hunt of the Agricultural Extension Service, serves as a clearing house for workers and farmers and seeks to bring in surplus labor from other regions. Currently 14 farmers and 50 workers are registered as cotton picker demand grows.
Eight cases of Ration Book number 4 designated for Shafter residents sit in the Santa Fe depot. The Shafter Ration Board C O D refused to release them, saying no dice when asked to cover the cost. Local ration officials, already overworked, must wait for a benevolent citizen or the OPA to act.
Directors of the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District granted exclusion for Robert Neuman’s property after a heated clash with their attorney Donald G. Kendall and opponents led by James Abercrombie. Testimony cited well depths of 90 feet and drawdown to 97 feet, with irrigation unlikely for current crops. A prior exclusion for George Crome was noted, and a mandamus case brought by Abercrombie’s group awaits Judge Warren Stockton’s ruling within about eighty days. Neuman’s witnesses argued district costs would be prohibitive. An irrigation engineer testified plan to buy pumping plants and import water from the Central Valley Project could cost landowners $22 per acre annually. Neuman stated current costs were 50 cents per acre foot per year, with usage around 4 to 3% acre feet.
The Third War Loan drive for Southern California aims for a 422 million dollar quota, with final tallies not until October 16. Robert H. Moulton reports sales already exceed the Sunday figure of 402 million, crediting thousands of volunteers and supporting groups for the drive’s apparent success.
Shafter Red Cross reports the bandage unit produced 3500 bandages in September. Mrs. B. Kruger, production manager, calls for additional workers. The unit currently operates Thursdays and Fridays at the city fire house with evening shifts to be announced. A local chapter meeting on Thursday October 14 will address the upcoming membership roll call chaired by Mrs. Phil Charme son.
Colonel James L Grisham is named the new commandant of Minter Field replacing Colonel Carl W Pyle who moves to Mather Field Sacramento Grisham arrives from Santa Ana where he has been Inspector General of the Army Air Forces Western Flying Training Command since July 1941 A veteran flyer and Army man he hails from Monticello Arkansas and has two sons one a West Point cadet and the other an engineer at Douglas Aircraft Santa Monica He is a pioneer test pilot and held posts at Maxwell Field Alabama and in the Eastern Flying Training Command.
War Chest as 640 are being asked to subscribe five dollars to the National War Chest drive starting October 18. Henry Netfeld named chairman for Shafter area by Arthur Crites with USO and war welfare support as its aim. Local committees will be announced soon. Mrs. J A Leatherman of Portland visits Shafter residents.
Shafter High hosts Wasco in the first of a two game wartime series Saturday October 16. Wasco holds a slight edge in pregame reports though Shafter is inexperienced after two years without interschool play. Coach Lowell Todd directs 26 man Shafter squad featuring Salvador Palomo Harvey Neuman Kenny Burkhard and Leonard Schaeffer.
Rev William S Harper told Shafter Rotary Club that self complacency and bureaucratic rule threaten American democracy. He traced government from the Continental Congress to today praising the Constitution and noting wartime sacrifices by Washington. He shared a Lincoln anecdote about freeing 70 Indians, and mentioned Coast Guard member Art Craig and Bakersfield residents Norman Pulaski and Donald Kendall with Herb Midgley as program chairman.
Shafter residents rush to the Press office to send Christmas subscriptions to sons overseas without prior orders, with a deadline set for October 15 for both subscriptions and Christmas packages to Army service members.
E B Stringham reports Shafter USO under Mrs Elizabeth Rice offers a home like atmosphere with chairs games writing facilities and bi monthly dances run by service clubs. Wasco girls serve as hostesses and Sunday at homes draw up to 90 boys as churches sponsor. The group seeks housing priority steps through federal authorities.
Ninety nine Mexican nationals who helped Shafter farmers harvest crops since June 2 left this week for Klamath Falls Oregon to work in potatoes under contract. Most have recently worked on the guayule rubber project and are under contract by the Wet Food administration. The project will now secure needed local labor.
The Shafter Kiwanis Club announced the annual Halloween parade for Monday at 6:30 pm. Participants from Shafter High School and surrounding districts are invited to wear patriotic costumes, ride decorated bicycles or bring pets in costume. Judges include Mrs. Stringham, Mrs. Little, and Mrs. Lachenmaier with master of ceremonies Herb Schirmer.
Les Hobson has been advanced to Pharmacist’s Mate class and is stationed at the S. Naval Hospital in Eureka California, where he has served for eight months. He is also a co owner of the Dial Cleanery in town.
A three man party Dutch Thomas of Shafter William Radford of Wasco and O L Y Sitters of Bakersfield hunted in the Flats country for two weeks. Thomas and Radford both brought back bucks during the trip.
