On Thursday Sept 29 at 7 30 a m a See You at the Pole event was held in Shafter. Local high school students opened with prayer and welcome as a group played music. Students and curious onlookers shared fellowship and refreshments followed the music.
A Wasco man escaped a house fire on September 28. Kern County Fire Department crews responded to a 1200 square foot home on D Street, 75 percent involved, with 16 firefighters and Wasco State Prison Fire Crew assisting. Downed live power lines hampered access. the victim was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Bakersfield. He sustained burns to the arm leg and chest and was in fair condition hoping to leave hospital in about a week.
October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a focus on awareness and screening. USA.gov resources encourage spreading the word and supporting early detection efforts as breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States.
Minter Field Air Museum welcomed about 60 Elk Hills School K third graders from Tupman and Taft over two days last week, with another group planned for next Friday. Visitors enjoyed the hangar aircraft as the museum offers free tours Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm with appointments on other days.
Shafter High School aims to raise API and CAHSEE results after a 19 point drop, with CASHEE English and Math classes, after school tutoring, and noon programs. Principal Connie Sacks says past gains suggest recovery possible, stressing teacher admin parent and student collaboration.
