Citizens of Shafter will meet at Veterans Memorial Hall at 7 30 p m to elect Community Chest board members and set the fall campaign schedule. Directors may be re elected and plans include a kickoff breakfast and canvassing to raise funds for agencies including Boy Scouts Maple Scouts Campfire Girls YMCA Hi Y and the Shafter Recreation Commission. Five eighth grade girls vie for queen at the Richland School PTA carnival Tuesday night. Candidates are Barbara Prickett, Delores Higbee, Anita Paslay, Viola Ramirez and LaVelle Stoller, each from a different teacher’s class. Votes come from 10-cent booth purchases with 100 votes per ticket, counted at 8:30 p.m. by A B Wallace and Ernest Hofman of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds fund welfare work at the school. The carnival opens at 5 p.m. with a barbecue, on the Richland School grounds, featuring booths for cake walk, food, fish pond, milk bottles, popcorn, movies, novelties, homemade candy, ice cream, dart game, and duck ring, plus booths by local service clubs.

Battle Ewing of Mississippi, an agricultural engineer, will head all cotton mechanization at the U S Cotton Station in Shafter replacing Kenneth C Smith now with the Marines At Stoneville Mississippi Ewing joined the national mechanization program in 1947 and arrives with wife Ann He holds a BS from Mississippi State UC Davis MA in agriculture and served as a World War I paratrooper with the 101st Airborne in the Battle of the Bulge.

John Nale of Wasco appears set to lose his post on the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District board by default after moving out of the district. His name will not appear on February ballots as a result.
