Powell Freed After Murder Trial In Bakersfield Hearing
Court ruled there was insufficient evidence to bind Chestley Powell over for murder in the Sept 1 shooting of Julius Cantrell during an insurance claim dispute. Powell, 55, claimed self defense as Cantrell allegedly reached for a hidden hand and Powell had his gun drawn from beneath his shirt. Factors cited included Powell’s recovery from a serious operation and witness testimony about Cantrell’s behavior. Local sentiment leaned toward acceptance of the magistrate’s decision.
