Shafter PRVISS Tackles Hispanic Representation on School Board
The RLSD board debate centers on trustee area voting and bilingual role models. Manuel Melero, elected Nov. 3 after a recall, faces concerns about ethnic representation and potential lawsuits. Community figures like Kerrie Melero and Deanna Rodriguez Root weigh voting scope and election timing, with census data showing Hispanic majority in K-8 enrollment. The committee’s recommendation heads to Kern County Superintendent of Schools with a possible March 2, 1993 ballot date and hopes for higher turnout and lower costs.
