Shafter City Council will fill three expiring terms on the Planning Commission with to-be-announced appointees by Dec. 31, 1996. Residents 18 or older may submit a letter of interest detailing qualifications to City Council at 336 Pacific Ave by Dec. 8, 1992.
The Shafter Press will close Thursday and Friday toward Thanksgiving. Deadlines for the December 2 issue include Classified reader ads by 10 a.m. Monday November 30, classified displays by 2 p.m. Wednesday November 25, display advertising by 10 a.m. Wednesday November 25, and editorial copy by 10 a.m. Monday November 30.
Kern County committee approves petition allowing Richland Lardo School District residents to choose trustee election method. Voters may keep at large system or switch to three trustee areas with area restricted voting, cost of a special election cited at ten thousand dollars.
The OCR in San Francisco exonerated the Richland-Lerdo School District from civil rights violations alleged by Hispanic and LEP students and parents. The 1992 letter claimed failures in handling staff conduct, LEP access, and participation in programs, including PC and GATE, plus facility use and Cinco de Mayo participation.
At Richland Primary School 282 kindergartners spent Native American Day in an Indian village setup on the front playground. Students learned buffalo hunting, fish drying, corn grinding, and crop practices while wearing painted crafts and accessories. Parents assisted, with photos captured as children role played village life.
Coy Ackerman led Shafter in varsity speech taking first. In scholastic division Eek Seroms placed, Erin Dixon finished third in language and literature. Honor division sees three A students per team with C students in varsity. Coach John De Vera and Mike Nix guided the group.
