The essay argues that Thanksgiving should inspire Americans to recognize global hunger, not indulge in smugness. It warns famine in Europe and Asia threatens freedom, urging aid to sustain Europe this winter and help rebuild its economy and agriculture. It stresses responsibility beyond gratitude.
At the Santa Fe and Tulare Avenue Wittenberg Poultry and Fish Market grand opening two Thanksgiving Turkeys were awarded. Numbers 38 and 1960 won for Friday and Saturday drawings. winners not present may pick up their birds this week. Arnold Wittenberg raises his own fowl at a nearby Shafter farm.
Shafter High School Colonels were blanked 20 to 0 at Wasco as Newman and Gilwitz sparked the Cubs offense. John Kelly missed the game with an injury, leaving Wasco to seal the win with third quarter and late fourth quarter scores.
Thanksgiving holiday shifts normal press day requiring earlier submission. News copy due by Wednesday noon and display ads by early Wednesday morning. Classified ads accepted until noon Wednesday.
Morton Brown won the Shafter Press Subscription Contest with 270,000 votes, followed by Webley Brown and Frances Rose. Prizes include 150 merchandise dollars for first place and weekly merchandise awards, plus 10% cash bonuses for other contestants. The event drew many new subscribers and renewals as four top contenders led at various times.
The Shafter 20-30 Club will donate all proceeds from the December 6 Lee Grabel magic show at Shafter High School gym to the City Park rest-room fund. The two hour performance features master magician Lee Grabel and his wife Helene with humor and illusion. Tickets are 75 cents for all and school children selling five admissions receive one free.
The County Fire Department battled a Saturday blaze at Rio Bravo School where seven bales of cotton on a transport truck caught fire. Firefighters extinguished most of the flames, saving roughly 40 percent of the cotton and limiting damage to the truck owned by Mr. California.
Gospel meetings sponsored by the Mennonite Brethren Church at the Corner of Kern and California Avenues will be held from November 30 through December.
The event features Rev Alvin Ysker presiding in a dynamic old fashioned spirit-filled gospel meeting. Irene Ysker, his sister, serves as the Children’s Worker with nightly gospel singing and special music. The meeting is open to all and invites attendees to bring others.

The Generals remained undefeated by defeating Wasco 13 to 6. Community Chest drive in Shafter nears its December close with a $4739 target near completion and wide donor response.
The Generals of Shafter beat Wasco 13 to 6 before about 6,000 fans in a hard fought game. Bob Scales and Mickey Hair sparked the comeback with a 65 yard second half kickoff return and a quick scoring drive set up by Scales to Fletcher.
Led by Bob Matthias Tulare's Redskins defeated Delano 14 to 0 in a playoff game to win the Tulare Kings county big schools league championship. Matthias ran 65 yards for a touchdown and scored another from the five yard line. Tulare earns valley playoff eligibility as champions in the large schools group.
The first installment of taxes on real and personal property will be delinquent December 5 1947 at 5 pm with a 6 percent penalty added. If you acquired property after the first Monday in March 1947 and have not paid, contact the County Tax Collector for tax information.
Shafter Cub Pack holds its next meeting Friday November 28 at the Richland cafeteria. At the October 30 gathering Cubmaster Bennie Goossen presided and awarded Wolf Wolf Honor Points Bear Honor Points Lion Honors Points and Owl honors to scouts including Eric Hansen Ronald Siemens Robbie Goossen LeRoy Kirschenmann Garry Weyand Charles Carter. Refreshments were served by Dens 2 and 4.
A correction states S. A. Camp Gins in Shafter ginned 6000 bales, all at Shafter. Additional S. A. Camp Gins in Wasco, Rosedale, and McFarland have ginned over 19,000 bales, bringing the four gins total to over 25,000 bales to date.
A group of 10 Future Farmers from Shafter will leave at 7 am with 40 head of cattle to compete in the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles. Supervising is Holger Hansen, with judging next weekend and post show cattle sales planned at the Hotel Figueroa.
