Depot nomination moves forward with Shafter group

Shafter Depot seeks National Register listing and museum status

The Shafter Historical Society pushed to preserve the depot and pursue National Register Historic Places inclusion with support from the Kern County Museum. Volunteers meet Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. and donations are sought to fund ongoing restoration and the museum project for the Shafter Chamber.

Police offer rewards after bar fight and burglary in Shafter

A Shafter police report details a Saturday incident near Central Avenue where a man kicked out two windows at Shafter Drug Store and a burglary in the 400 block of Olsen. Rewards totaling 750 dollars are offered for information leading to arrest and conviction. Israel Gutierrez and Jesus Corrales were arrested for public intoxication and related acts. Shafter Generals Rally To Beat Garces In Thrilling Football

Shafter High School football pounced on Garces, overcoming early fumbles and injuries to Pat Torigiani. The Generals surged with a strong second half, scoring in the third and fourth quarters to seal a hard fought win and clinch at least a tie. Cross country saw frosh-soph move up to varsity and capture the area title as part of a day full of wins.

Arvin High hosts ninth annual Marching Band Half-Time Contest

Thirteen bands compete Saturday at Barle Stadium Arvin with competition in three attendance divisions. Awards include first second and third place trophies for each division plus best drum major majorette drill team flags rifles percussion and identification unit. Classical to funk tunes perform and Bakersfield College Renegade Band offers an afternoon demo. Snacks and drinks sold.

Cotton Seminar Set at Shafter Station on November 20

The U S D A Cotton Research Station in Shafter will host a public seminar on water management of cotton presented by soil scientist Harry Nightingale and agricultural engineer Terry Howell. The session begins Thursday November 20 at 2 30 p m in the west conference room at 17053 Shafter Avenue Shafter.
