Spirits rise as Shafter and Wasco prepare for a high turnout game at Wasco Stadium. The Shafter Generals, undefeated 192-point tally, meet Wasco in a non league matchup with a long running rivalry and a trophy awarded to the ten year winner.
Central Valley highway officials and local leaders examined three Shafter to Wasco routes. They prioritized an underpass at the railroad crossing and discussed the hazardous stretch along tracks to the Rosedale Taft turnoff. The meeting included Chamber presidents Bill Stoller and J. D. Campbell and engineering staff from Kern Fresno and Kings counties.
A lack of quorum cancelled the city council meeting scheduled for Monday night. Council members Russell and Loewen were in Oregon attending a Mennonite Brethren churches conference, while Councilman Kirk was called to Santa Barbara. The next council session is planned for Monday evening, November 28.
Phil Ohanneson a prominent Shafter investor suffered a heart attack Sunday morning at his Avenue home. He was revived and rushed to Mercy Hospital Bakersfield. his wife reports he is improving and plans to return home in about two weeks. Visitors are restricted per doctors to aid recovery.
Susan Kay has been selected as the name for the new daughter of Mr and Mrs Alex M Dobrenen of Shafter. Their first child arrived at the Wasc o Maternity Home on November 5 weighing eight pounds eight ounces.
Mr and Mrs Robert Mettler celebrate the birth of their first child a son at 10 30 am Saturday November 12 at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield. The baby weighs five pounds thirteen ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Shultz welcomed a daughter named Darlene Joyce at Friese's Maternity Home Bakersfield arriving at nine AM Monday November 14. The baby weighed seven pounds four ounces and both mother and child are reported to be doing well.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schnidt and daughter Gina Mia of Bakersfield spent Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Meadows at their home.

Rotarians hosted their annual Ladies Nite with 75 members and wives attending a spaghetti dinner prepared by Jack Battaglia assisted by Ted Vignolo and Fred Bryant. Prizes included carving knives. entertainment featured two quartets from the Society for the Preservation of Barber Shop Quartettes in America Inc. The Four-Toon Tellers of Bakersfield and the Barber Shop Quartet performed for the group.
The Press announces next week's edition will publish on Wednesday November 23 instead of Thursday to give staff a Thanksgiving holiday. Advertisers and readers are reminded of the earlier deadline for notices and dealings.

Kiwanis Club members viewed still photos from a East Africa hunting trip taken by John Lachenmaier of Shafter and Dr. Wm. Moore of Bakersfield. Billy Lachenmaier acted as narrator and projectionist in his absence. Guests included Bill Irwin Verlon Mouser and Billy Lachenmaier.
Bill Stoller of Shafters Home Appliance and Furniture Co claims the paper’s promotion drew results for turkey offers and contests. He warns readers that last weekend’s coupon issues were printer related, and announces a new Saturday event with free drawing, an Ironrite ironing demonstration by Mrs. Senk, and ongoing register-anytime accessibility with no purchase required.
Shafter 20-30 Club members promote a Friday night inter community game against Wasco and display the ten year trophy to be awarded to the winner each year. Shafter seeks to reclaim the trophy after last year. The meeting discussed a $25,000 rheumatic fever drive and theater party plans with Fresno Bee and Panero Theaters plus Santa before Christmas. A Turkey Shoot yielded 118 ready turkeys and looks to become an annual event led by O D Handel.
Miss Rose Mary Emma known as Joan Taylor stays with Mervin Schirmers until tomorrow. Her debut starring film opposite Randolph Scott in Fighting Man of the Plains plays this week at the State Theater. Accompanying Miss Emma to Shafter is Leonard ity P use.
Police kept busy this week but the Shafter Fire Department reports no fires in ten days. Juan Llamas and Frankie Madine faced indecent exposure charges with 75 dollar fines and 90 day suspended terms. Joe Marie Herrera paid 50 on a 90 day suspended sentence. James Perry Lewis arrested for drunkenness with 25 dollar fine and 30 days suspended if law abides. White and Perez faced county charges with White fined 40 locally and 100 plus 90 day suspended term. Perez pending county disposition on vagrancy.
The Shafter-Wasco annual football clash will be rebroadcast Saturday at 10 a.m. on Station KTKR. The broadcast is provided through the courtesy of Weit's Hotel and Dining Room.
Shafter Maddox Brothers and Rose entertain with seven piece band at Shafter Veterans Memorial Hall starting 8:30. Canary and famous radio and stage stars on hand to perform in a lively varietal show inviting all to attend.
Shafter’s Generals stay undefeated with a 20 to 13 win over Dinuba’s Emperors. Glyn Scales connects on a sleeper pass to Jerry Johns for the first TD, and Jerry Johns later sets up another scoring drive. Fred Houston seals it with a two yard run and Harley Martin adds the extra point.
Leaders from Shafter Wasco Bakersfield and Fresno meet state highway officials in West to push a new Central Valley Highway as an alternate to Highway 99. Counties fund early segments under federal aid with state takeover hoped soon. Chamber of Commerce also promotes beautification of the Shafter approach with Oleanders along the Shafter to Cawelo route.
