Lady Elks Kick Off Holiday Season With Fashion Show
The Lady Elks auxiliary of the Elks lodge held their annual luncheon and fashion show to launch the local Christmas season and raise funds for scholarships. President Christie Christensen welcomed attendees and introduced Victoria Houchin of TV Channel 23 as emcee. Victoria, daughter of a Buttonwillow cotton farmer and a Shafter High School graduate, helped host the event as the downstairs Elk lodge banquet room near Shafter Wasco transformed into an Old Fashioned Christmas with two large trees and homemade paper chains. A turkey luncheon prepared by Bonnie Jones and staff followed the fashion show.

On Thursday November 16 2000 at 2 pm Shafter High School will observe a staged collision at the intersection of Manuel Street and Tulare Avenue. The exercise aims to illustrate holiday driving dangers and the consequences of intoxicated operation while highlighting safety awareness for students and the community.
