Shafter City Council welcomed a large turnout of mostly young attendees from Free Will Baptist Academy at the November 6 2001 session. Pastor Long presented cinnamon rolls to city staff and urged ongoing council support as youth leader Keith Starrh and Elliott Kirshenmann outlined the skate park need. The council, acknowledging the proposal, pledged to study the idea while funding for alley improvements south of West Lerdo Highway and north of Los Angeles Street proceeds via a $108 200 Community Development Block Grant with Burtch Construction chosen for the project. Additional financing from Gas Tax and TDA Funds will cover a $24 860 shortfall. Work set to begin in three weeks.
