The Shafter Merchants Committee invites residents to shop in Shafter and enter turkey drawings for Thanksgiving. Tickets are at participating merchants on November 15 and 16, with the drawing held November 16 at 4 p.m. in Town Square at Central and James. Must be present to win. Participating shops include Amies Fabrics, Shafter Drug, Central Pharmacy, Shirleys Dress Shop, Johnsons Department Store, Freemans Jewelers, Made O Day, Humpty Dumpty, Rasco's, Beno's, and the Shafter Press. The group discussed potential separation from the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Christmas caroling plans, Santa activities, and a Santa Phone Booth idea. The committee noted last year’s Homecoming Sale underperformed due to Thursday scheduling and meets monthly at Yee's Steak House.

Pot farmer Ray arrested on bench warrant in Shafter
Shafter police arrested Ronnie Travis Ray, 30, on a 170 dollar bench warrant from a July marijuana cultivation case after 12 plants were found in his backyard weighing four to five pounds. Ray had been found guilty and ordered to pay, but fell behind, triggering the warrant.
