Shafter Voters Reject Propositions 172 and 174 in Local Balloting
In Shafter, Proposition 172 failed 616 to 568 amid a countywide pattern that split on a measure to extend a temporary sales tax for public safety funds. The six precincts showed mixed results with three approving and three opposing. Proposition 174, the voucher spending measure, was decisively defeated locally with 454 yes and 738 no, as no precinct supported a majority of yes votes. Precinct breakdowns show narrow wins and losses across 12 to 17 with varying yes no tallies. The $23.6 million annual impact from the tin cup resolution remains in play for county taxpayers.

Beechie Awarded for Heroic Rescue Effort During House Fire
Shafter Police Officer Mary Beechie received a Community Service Award after entering a smoke filled home at 149 Nickel Street on a Tuesday to rescue 11 month old Phillip Ricapa from a crib. Despite her efforts the child perished. Beechie crawled through a window and handed the infant to a paramedic before collapsing from smoke inhalation.

Mennonites Celebrate 75 Years In Shafter Community Sunday
The Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church marks 75 years since its 1918 formation by German speaking Mennonites from the plains states. Pastor Dave Gerbrandt since 1990 leads a 325-member congregation with 246 average Sunday attendance. celebration on Sunday, Nov. 14, 1993, expected to draw about 400 attendees.

Judge May Rule In Favor Of Shafter RTC Dispute
Shafter City Manager Wade Mc Kinney expressed optimism a Friday ruling will favor the city in a dispute with the California Department of Corrections over almost 2 million dollars in RTC start up and construction costs. An audit by the Controller's Office, at about 100000, questioned documentation of spending though Mc Kinney says funds are accounted for and the contract with Gardeneyer Development was proper. The district attorney investigated but found no proof of misappropriation based on secretly recorded tapes.
