Birth of Shafter Tied to Railway Progress
The San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railway helped form Shafter with Kern County Land Company building cattle pens and a loading platform beside new tracks in 1898 at Central Avenue. Hero General William R. Shafter lent his name to the town, which grew as farmers settled the surrounding area. The Santa Fe Railway brought its Progress exhibit car to town on October 30 at the Santa Fe Station, showcasing 12 exhibits in a rolling museum on a 12500 mile network, including track geometry vehicles and Fuel Foiler trains reducing diesel use by one million gallons annually.
