Shafter High School marks its 75th anniversary during Rivalry Week with themed dress days from Twin Day to Blue and Gold Day. Students vote Friday for Homecoming King and Queen, announced at halftime of Saturday’s game against Wasco as part of the week’s activities.
Shafter West Point alum Eli Espericueta, a 1996 SHS graduate and former SHS wrestler, was promoted to captain in a mass ceremony with 16 lieutenants from the 4th Battalion, 6th Air. He is finishing the Captain's Career Course at Fort Bliss and will attend further training at Fort Leavenworth before a one year Korea tour. The event organized homecoming festivities include a Night Rally, Powder Puff game, and a Saturday parade plus football games and homecoming court selections.
Westside Family Fellowship Church in Wasco staged One Hour In Hell during Halloween drawing hundreds. Youth Pastor Brian Morin led a four night outreach that used a sermon styled as a show, drawing 80 volunteers and drawing long lines as crowds filled a 750 seat main building. The dramatic production used darkness and indoor pyrotechnics to depict hell, aiming to convey biblical warnings with sensitivity.
