Graduation ceremonies sweep area schools this week

This week marks annual graduations at Maple Rio Bravo and Lerdo schools with ceremonies Thursday June 1 at 8 p.m. The Richland district holds its 52nd graduation on Wednesday June 7 at 7 p.m. Superintendent Bruce Crawford will lead the final ceremony as diplomas are presented by Dr. Henry Noth, school board president.

Baccalaureate Services Set For June 4th

The Shafter High School class of 1967 will be honored by local churches on Sunday June 4 1967. Services begin at 4 p m with Reverend Calvin Stuebbe addressing graduates on Building On The Foundation. Other ministers include Reverend Elwood reer and Reverend Wayne Owen. Cheryle Weidenbach and Millie Burrow will provide musical selections. Spectators may not be seated during the Processional and Invocation.

Dessert Reception Honors Bruce Crawford in Richland

Bruce Crawford longtime Richland schools superintendent will be honored with a dessert reception on Thursday evening June 1 at 8 p.m. in the Richland Cafeteria. The event is endorsed by local service and civic organizations. Tickets cost $1 and are available from Mrs. Jessie Cole or the Chamber of Commerce Office. A Richland string quintet directed by Dick Southwick will perform, featuring Ann Christensen, Sonja Nelson, Margaret Ratzlaff, Debbie Bell, and Karen Southwick.

Cadet James to Graduate from West Point on June 7

Cadet John R. James son of Mr and Mrs Richard G James will graduate from the U S Military Academy at West Point on Wednesday June 7 with a bachelor of science degree. He is 21 and a 1963 Shafter High School graduate. He is assigned to artillery and ranked sergeant first class in the Corps of Cadets.

Funeral Services Planned Thursday for Jack Heinlein

Property Owners Protest Rally to Be Held in Kern County

Donald Hawkins of the Kern County Property Owners Association will moderate a property tax protest rally at 7 30 p m Thursday June 1 in Harvey Auditorium. Shafter Cotton Research Station records show temperatures reaching 100 on May 22 and 23 with a cooler 78 degrees on Sunday May 28. Soil temperatures remained high above 70, detailing the week’s heat pattern and daily highs and lows.

Coast to Coast opens new Shafter store by Dean Harvey

Dean Harvey announces the Coast to Coast store opening in Shafter at 333 Central Avenue scheduled for June 1, 1967. The new location will offer eleven departments including hardware, automotive, housewares, appliances, sporting goods, and more, expanding a chain with 1,600 stores in 23 states. Harvey formerly ran Western Auto in Shafter and has led local business for four years.

Mr and Mrs Albert Janzen from Cross reunite with ten siblings and spouses from San Jose as they gather in Los Angeles for the May 18 funeral of John Wichert 72 who died of a heart attack. Surplus Water Poses Challenge for Shafter Wasco District

The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District faces a potential surplus of about 20 000 acre feet as late season rains delayed irrigation and valley streams run at twice normal levels. Districts will still receive full supply, but using their quota becomes difficult and sales to other districts will be minimal. Cliff McGraw Wins Westchester Bowl Finalists Spot in LA

Cliff McGraw, absent from league bowling since Midway closure, won his division at Westchester Bowl in Los Angeles and becomes eligible for the Herald Examiner 78000 tournament final. He averages 195 and rolled 995 across five games with scores of 201 184 186 191 233, sealing the win with six straight strikes. The final date and venue will be announced. prize includes a trophy and 25 toward entry fees plus a chance at a Buick. May permits issued list business structures and one home. Firms include Charles Sill Company at 345 Walker and Standard Oil Company at 451 East Lerdo each for 4000 dollars. Country Bay Market ran by Bill Gong for 1500 dollars and Shafter Marketing Association for 900 dollars. A residence remodeling permit went to John Dalke for Marshal Unruh at 415 Walnut totaling 5000 dollars.
