Body of Pvt. Goodwin to be reburied in Shafter
Remains of Pvt. Benjamin D. Goodwin of the 101st Infantry Division will be returned to Shafter for a Friday arrival and Saturday 2:30 p.m. church service. He died from wounds after Battle of the Bulge, and will be buried beside cousin Pvt. William Hobbs. Goodwin, born 1921 in Hartshorne Oklahoma, enlisted 1941, had lived in Shafter. American Legion to handle burial, with military guard and color guard at ceremony.

Poppy Sale in Shafter a Huge Community Success
Mrs P C Cluenther chairs the American Legion poppy drive over the weekend thanking Shafter residents for their support. About 2300 poppies were distributed with special praise for Newman Ce for the party window display and Schirmer's Department Store for posters. Auxiliary members Nellie Lassiter and others and nine Campfire girls sold poppies. prize winners to be announced later.

Bank Addition Will Be Finished In Two Months
The Shafter branch of Bank of America will complete remodeling and expansion in about two months. Local manager P. C. Clarkin says the upgrades include an enlarged officers platform, ten teller windows, a expanded public lobby, fluorescent lighting, acoustic tile ceilings, and over 1200 additional square feet of floor space to create a modern banking unit. Construction began last month.

Drunken Robbery Hits Potato Sheds In Holiday Incident
Two unidentified transients broke into Hitchcock and Jacobsen potato sheds and slugged and robbed Dewey Kirk and Cecil Payne who were drunk. Both victims suffered facial cuts and the attackers fled. Local cops logged ten holiday arrests for drunkenness and related offenses.

May Dust Storms Hit Shafter Across Month
Shafter endured its fifth dust storm of May last Friday with winds 15 to 20 mph and visibility dropping to one mile at peak. By 10 p.m. visibility rose to three miles and dust began to settle. The month’s worst storm occurred May 7 causing local and farm district damage. other storms hit May 13 20 and 22. No damage from Friday’s event was reported.

The Leslie L. Robinson post 213 of the Shafter American Legion conducted a formal Memorial Day observance at Shafter cemetery. About 500 attendees heard symbolic rites over the grave of Marine Staff Sergeant Johnny Lavern Melvin, killed at Iwo Jima on September 22, 1944.

The Miners scored first on a wild pitch in the first, Shafter’s Russell and Gaede combined for a tie in the third, and in the ninth Peters reached on an error to score the winning run for Shafter.
