Jennifer Nelson was named Shafter's first Young Woman of the Year at the May Festival ceremonies on Friday May 18 in a packed auditorium. She is yearbook editor at Shafter High and aims to become an elementary school teacher. Jenny Ingle was runner up.

Festival awards announced for multiple events. In the 10-K run for men ages 14 to 55, John Michaels took first, Eric Pugh second, Daniel Rodriguez third. Women 5-K top time went to Kathy Swee with Debbie DePetro second and Joan M Handel third. mens 5-K for ages 13-33 saw Daniel Cruz first and Terry Lewis second. Battle of the Bands crowned Traxter first and Prisoner second. Men’s BBQ contest: Don Zachary Cornish Game Hens won, Claude New Jr Tri-up second, Clay Appleton Fish third.

Traffic Signals Planned for Five Points Intersection
City Engineer John Guinn announced a traffic signal project for Shafter’s Five Points, pending for about five years, with an approximate 45-day installation beginning in June. Federal funds of 125000 will support the work by Community Electric Inc. of San Rafael.
