A community notes the plight of farm workers in Shafter lacking housing and basic facilities. Transients camp without water or toilets, sparking calls for sanitary camps and eventual permanent housing with public and civic support.
Summer recreation kicks off Tuesday June 3 with Fiesta a technicolor dancing Latin rhythms film shown outside the high school gym. June 10 features an amateur show for elementary students with prizes from Shafter merchants. Ray Kitts is the contact for participation. Family entertainment all summer each Tuesday night.
The Shafter Branch of Bank of America will be open Saturday reversing an earlier notice that it would be closed. The bank will close Friday for Memorial Day.
Voters in Shafter approve an additional school tax 209 yes to 29 no to fund a new swimming pool and other improvements at Richland School. Architects Ernest Kump and Associates plan the pool on the northwest corner of the 20 acre Richland grounds with spectator stands and parking. Trustees meet June 9 to canvass votes and push construction to be ready next spring.
Kiwanis jumped to a 4 run lead and held on for a 9 to 4 victory over Rotary in a lively softball classic. Harold Greene and Pat Kelly keyed Rotary plays, while Kiwanis fielders including Bill Carpenter and Bert Ware contributed strong defense and a double play in the first inning.
Pfc. John Collins from Camp Stoneman spent a ten day furlough visiting the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Farrell recently.
Tomorrow night at the Woman's Club building the 20-30 Club presents a Harvest Dance with Jerry Adams orchestra, a Kern County top band. Tickets at the door cost 1.10. Proceeds fund the annual children’s Christmas party. Greg Majory serves as general chairman with Merv Schirmer as club president and others handling decor, prizes, and refreshments.
The Choir of the Reformed Church hosted a buffet supper and swimming party Sunday evening at the home of Harold and Mrs Schnaidt.
Jolene Waymire, 11, led the annual Poppy Days sale by selling 350 poppies Friday and Saturday. Andrea Eckert finished second with 250 poppy sales. The Camp Fire group, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, raised 361.10 for child welfare work, with poppies made by hospitalized veterans.
The Kern County Texas Club plans its annual barbecue picnic at Kern River Park this Sunday with about 3000 expected attendees. Judge W. L. Bradshaw leads the club with directors including Barney Barnes County Supervisor Hollis Roberts and Lawson Lowe.
The County Library announces No Fine Week during the first week of June. Patrons may return overdue books without any fines, including books from other branches. Mrs. Wedge urges borrowers to check for and return any library books in their possession during the event.
Shafter City Council finalizes a half cent sales tax ordinance to take effect July 1. The tax, collected by retailers and restaurants within city limits, applies to most merchandise under state tax rules excluding items bought for resale. About 100 California cities have adopted similar plans to fund street, police, and other services. A merchants committee backed the plan, and the council vote was unanimous.
The Shafter summer recreation program opened Monday with 105 children. Twenty softball teams are set, with leagues for men, juniors, and girls starting next week. Roy Farrell directs, with Kleinkauf Morris aiding. programs funded by Kern County and local districts.
Dr Keith Musgrave joins the Shafter practice taking over from Dr L H McGrane who has served ten years and is moving to Banning. Musgrave comes from Stockton after a year with Dr R N Layne and Navy service. He previously worked with Dr W J Nicholson in Oakland and served at Kaiser's Permanente Field Hospital in Richmond before moving here. He has purchased the building and expects to start duties in the first week of June.
