By a 7 to 1 vote residents approve a first class swimming pool for next spring. Trustees plan irrigation water stabilization and a new sewage disposal system, with a bond need and two thirds support to fund it, or growth will stall.
Home Appliance Company started a large new addition to its Shafter building, extending frontage 25 feet to Weston property and adding 65 feet backward. Contractor George Vannatta will oversee the project, which doubles floor space and expands appliance, furniture, and floor covering departments. A model Westinghouse all electric kitchen will feature in the enlarged store.
An 11 year old, Ronnie Siemens, earned a $29.40 radio by securing 14 Press subscriptions. Other Shafter youths 10 or older win balls, bats and prizes. Visit the Shafter Press today for details.
Shafter Chamber of Commerce plans a finance drive next Friday to fund an expanded program and to fund lighted Christmas decorations for the town. In cooperation with the 20 30 Club the group aims to make Shafter the best decorated town in the valley and to expand membership across business and agricultural interests. The drive notes achievements like annexation to the Dr Morris Mosquito Abatement district and the South Shafter Farm Labor center while promoting the Central Valley Highway. Ernest Panero is president.
Ray Proctor and his son Dale with Red Matheson brought in a live raccoon captured near Glenville. The animals fought back, biting all three hunters as they used dogs to corral it. Proctor, a lifelong hunter, has killed several raccoons this year but this is the first collected alive.
R C Mayberry became ill Saturday and was rushed to Bakersfield Hospital where his condition is reported serious by doctors.
Mr and Mrs William Lowe welcomed Betty Pinkham and her husband Harold and their son Stephen to their home along with friend Mrs Avery of Whittier for a recent visit.
The first summer recreation community night happens Tuesday at 8 pm in the high school gym area. Fiesta the technicolor film will be shown with audience seated outside in cool air. Admission is free and a live talent show for elementary students is set for June 10 with prizes offered by Shafter merchants. Call Ray Kitts at Shafter 4611 to enter.
Shafter starts a two half season league across two diamonds at the high school. Each half runs about four weeks with winners meeting to decide the league champion. Week one features daily doubleheaders from June 3 to 9 with matchups including Food Town, Shafter Paint Store, Central Market and more across Diamonds 1 and 2.
Myrle Royal from Shafter will compete in the Miss California contest June 13 to 15 in Santa Cruz for a chance to represent California in the Miss America finals in Atlantic City. Due to a mix up in entrance qualifications the top three Kern County contestants are sent to the state event.
Final plans outline a gas model airplane meet at Richland School on West Lerd next Monday at 7 p.m. Prizes and cups await winners in main divisions as judges Arnold Heffley and a Bakersfield coin shop proprietor prepare to decide. Admission is free and lights will illuminate the field for a first time Shafter event drawing hundreds.
Shafter business leaders and officials discussed public health concerns and potential use of federal mobile camp units for itinerant farm workers. County officials warned against permanent public camps, citing past failures, tax burdens, and the risk of attracting long term transients. The group urged a supervised, temporary solution for harvest seasons.
Shafter reports show about 300 cars of spuds shipped this week, near last Wednesday’s peak of 317 cars. Prices held at 2.70 to 2.75 per ton for good spuds with firm local and eastern demand. Daily shipments expected 250 to 300 cars. total to date 2210 cars, 544 more than last season. If digging remains favorable and acreage decreases, the season could wind up around July 1 with earlier completion than usual.

State and federal officials move toward construction of two initial sections of the Central Valley Highway from Wasco to Elmo and from the Kings County line to the Fresno county line. Contracts total 327141 dollars with Rand Construction Co and Valley Paving Co winning bids.

Don Hull McCreary, vice president of Quentin Engineers, Ltd., will visit Shafter Friday to meet with city officials and Chamber of Commerce members about expanding the town sewer disposal system. His firm has been contracted by the Shafter Public Utility District to design the expansion.
The Shafter district expects a record sugar beet per acre yield this season with 12 000 acres in Kern county, up 2 000 from last year. Beet harvest starts July 14 with 100 percent machine work and a $1 per ton price rise. Three companies Holly American Crystal and Spreckels contracted for beets in the area. Last year yielded 21 tons per acre versus a twelve year average of 17 tons.
Constable Blake Witcher with Pi Os County Sheriff's Office arrested three Wasco youths Isaiah Ownes 21 Solomon Shugart 25 and Charlie Stovall 18 after the assault and robbery of A. R. Culver and Annabelle Kirby near Wasco on Wasco Pond Road. Culver was struck and robbed of about 8 dollars and Kirby was forced into a car before being released as daylight neared. They will be arraigned before Judge Stewart McGee of the Sixth Township Court.
Judge E. K. Grant heard cases yesterday. W. C. Boatright was fined 40 dollars and given a 90 day suspended sentence for drunkenness and disturbing the peace. M. C. Rice received 90 days in the County Road Camp with 90 days suspended for drunkenness and battery. John Martinez got 30 days in the County Road Camp with 60 days suspended for battery. Freeman M. Dalton was fined 20 dollars and given a 90 day suspended sentence for drunkenness and disturbing the peace.
