Shafter honors high school scholars at achievement banquet
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and local groups honor 85 students from Shafter High and area elementary schools at the Achievement Banquet. District officials, a school band, and volunteers from cafeterias and service clubs attended the event, with photos appearing later in this issue. Janzen promoted to principal at Orosi High School. he previously coached and served as counselor.

Richland to graduate 207 one of largest classes ever
Richland eighth graders will receive diplomas in the sixtieth annual commencement at Shafter High School stadium at 7 p.m. Tickets are required for graduates and their families. A reception, dance, and party follow in local venues. District leaders and sponsors will award diplomas and honors as a long list of graduates is announced.

Graduation Ceremony Set for June 6 at SHS Stadium
Shafter High School will hold its graduation exercises next Thursday at 8 p.m. in the high school stadium. Senior class president Betela Casas will speak, with Edwin Camp Theresa Thompson and Betela Espericueta as student speakers. Diplomas will be presented by Shafter Mayor Richard Lareen and a Kern Joint Union High School District representative. David Woodworth of the Union Congregational Church will deliver a benediction and music will be provided by the Shafter High School Band.

Lieut. Larry D. Keinath, 23, was buried with full military honors at Shafter Memorial Park after dying in a T-38 jet training crash at Columbus AFB Mississippi. Captain Swanson survived with minor injuries. Surviving are his parents a brother and his widow.

A large crowd gathered at Shafter Memorial Park for Memorial Day rites led by the American Legion Post of Leslie L. Robinson. The Avenue of Flags honored local veterans as families laid flowers and wreaths, with prayers, a wreath-laying by service groups, a firing squad salute, and Taps to conclude the ceremony.
