New assistant curator joins museum staff in Bakersfield area
Sheila Valpredo has become assistant curator at the Museum. She will work on genealogy and history, research Southern San Joaquin Valley history for ten years, and collaborate with the Shafter Historical Society to interview pioneer residents. Valpredo volunteers Wednesdays and the first Saturday monthly at the Depot, cross references data for access, and lives in Mettler with husband Jon, son Mark, and daughter Angela.

Borrowing to Invest Tax Deductions Under New Law
The new tax law lets you deduct interest on loans used to invest up to the amount of your investment income. This includes dividends, interest, and capital gains. The deduction limit applies to interest paid in 1987 onward, regardless of when the debt was incurred. Any disallowed interest can reduce future investment income.
