The May Festival Committee meets at 7 p.m. to evaluate this year’s plans. Attendees include seniors from the W C Walker Senior Center and local civic groups. Roger Coroytert Park hosts a gathering with American Legion Post 913 and Boy Scout Troop members.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture met May 22 at JD's with Ross Shafer leading. Kathy Bernardi was introduced as recording secretary and festival plans were reviewed. Festival chairman Ben Grundy praised the parade and said preparations for next year should begin. The group noted 1988 marks Shafter's 75th anniversary and the city's 50th incorporation. Committee actions included funding for the Fourth of July fireworks at $2750 and Kiwanis sponsorship for GSA activities for youth.
The TOE program under Kern High School District targets 17 to 21 year olds who lack a diploma. Jeannie Flores coordinates training and placement, paying the first 250 hours of work and handling payroll paperwork while employers verify time sheets and assess performance for potential permanent hiring.
