Precincts are reorganized to five and some voting occurs outside the city. Kern County Clerk Vera K. Gibson oversees new punched card voting and high speed tabulation the first county wide use. The 1969-70 annual meeting revealed a $288 392.14 spendable distribution to members amid lower yields and weak demand. Manager Glenn Mark praised the staff and board for guiding the cooperative through adversity, noting the patronage dividend included 112 175 from 1965 66. Continued on page.
Shafter city council approved closing three blocks of Central Avenue for a Flea Market and Sidewalk Sale set for Saturday June 6. Lee Fike of the Merchants Division urged space use to handle expected crowds.
Temperatures reaching 100 degrees in Shafter aided cotton growth after a slow start from cool spring weather. Early irrigation was needed as winds dried soils, but progress improved in fields with adequate moisture. USDA Cotton Research Station reports soil temps held around 74-77F highs and 68-71F lows with daily readings recorded at the station.
Shafter residents will gather in Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday for a one hour Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Rev. Sam Wilcoxon and McKnight will speak, with color guards, a National Guard firing squad, and buglers concluding with taps. An open house and graveside decorations precede the event.
Shafter plans a Flea Market and Sidewalk Sale on downtown streets June 6 with a two hour Memorial Day closing for all businesses. Merchants Division chair Lee Fike said stores should close 10 30 a m to 12 30 p m for services at Shafter Cemetery.
Bill Plummer, associate editor of the press, travels to Huron South Dakota after learning his sister Ruth A. Plummer has died. Ruth was a retired Huron teacher who served at Junior High for about 40 years and spent winters in Pasadena working at Vroman's Book Store.
The Richland Elementary School District board of trustees voted against Proposition 8 at a three hour meeting amid presentations from both sides. Bakersfield figures Cal Burnl supported the measure while Tom Folsom of Kern County Taxpayers Association opposed it. The move followed a request from the Richland Teachers Association for a formal board stance.
