Second redevelopment area may boost Shafter economy
Shafter plans a second redevelopment area within 90 days to lure industry and support MFAD. City Manager Wade McKinney says in-house staff will manage the process aimed at attracting a $20 million, 120-job industrial facility. RLSD and MFAD officials expect positive outcomes with attention to noise, traffic, and clean air. The airport district linking to the city water system should finish by late July or August.

Richland faces ongoing challenges in Shafter district
RLSD Superintendent Dr. Dan Knapp has steered through dwindling resources amid California district consolidations. Proposals to restructure to a K-6 model aim to save around 500000 over five years, but parental resistance stalled changes. A new youth activity center is proposed with RLSD and SRPD oversight to coordinate programs, while bilingual staffing meets needs for limited English learners.

May festival memories linger after Shafter Potato and Cotton Fest
The Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival wrapped May 22 and 23 with gunfighters, magic acts, and Elvis visits. A 46-entry parade flowed from Manuel Park Saturday morning, awarding prizes to Miss Kern County, COFC Young Woman of the Year, and other winners. Grand Marshals Harlin and Elma Wilson, with Elma once Potato Queen in 1931, capped a two day celebration now fondly recalled.
