Local residents travel to Bakersfield Los Angeles Fresno and Paso Robles for hospital visits business and family matters. Families join summer guests in Shafter while others spend weekends at Long Beach Pismo Beach Kern River park and San Diego coast.
Betsy Ritter, wife of E R Clemens of Terra Bella, recounts Rhyolite Nevada in a new Terra Gella News booklet Life in the Ghost City of Rhyolite Nevada. The work covers 1905 to 1911 with notes from newspaper files and personal memories.
Shafter high school senior Merwin Olson qualified for the state meet in Visalia next Saturday by sweeping the 108 and 220 yard dashes at the valley small schools meet in Lemoore. He set a valley record of 22.6 seconds in the 220 and was officially timed 10.4 in the 100.
The Rio Bravo 4-H Club held its monthly meeting in the school auditorium. Gene Stewart led the business session while Phil Haag announced a bulletin board project and Rosalyn Sears noted a fundraising movie after school. Carl Haag outlined a livestock tour after school ends and Mrs. Carl Haag spoke on a luncheon at the Farm Bureau directors’ meeting in June.
An annual award assembly at Shafter High School is set for next Wednesday. The event will recognize outstanding students with awards in athletics F F A student leadership citizenship and other honors.
Hollywood Park gears up for a 47 day turf season starting Memorial Day May 30. Open day feature is the $10 000 Hollywood Premiere handicap with up to a dozen sprinters. Nominations close May 25. Among contenders are Don Mike RaII and Comet III Wed ding Call Joy Boy Hard Lu First Kiss Royal Crusader Jubal Junior Son of War Hysterical Specify. The stable population grows with shipments from Churchill Downs and the east. Francis P Dunne is new racing secretary and Samuel C Nichols new presiding steward. A Puett electric starting gate is in use. San Joaquin Valley Oil Men plan a June 1 barbecue and golf tournament at Stockdale Country Club.
Helen Nickel earned the Home Appliance Award for an essay on Westinghouse refrigerators. The contest, sponsored by Emil Stoller of the local appliance store, was open to girls in Shafter High School home economics classes. Stella Nixon won second prize and Nina Peters third. The store’s equipment was inspected in recent weeks by home ec students.
A yield of 300 sacks per acre was reported Monday morning as potato digging started at the Robert Neuman and Sons ranch northwest of Shafter.
Thirty adult titles were received in the mid month delivery at the Shafter library per librarian Mrs. Thomas Wedge. The new batch includes works by Aldrich Boucher Christie Cole Gregory Kalashnikoff Keating Miller Morley Payne Priestley Raine Seifert Tuttle Zara and others along with biographies and science and history books.
