A reflection urges the United States to boost anti communist allies in Europe and Asia to counter Russia expansion. It compares Stalin to Hitler, warns of a potential dark age if America fails, and calls for resourcefulness drive faith and courage to lead the world.
Mrs Annette Albright was installed as president of the Business and Professional Women's Club with assistance from Central District President Mrs Illene Dennen. Officers include Verna Furlong as vice president Lorraine Kleinkauf recording secretary Geraldine Unruh corresponding secretary and Juanita Battaglia treasurer.
Eighth grade graduation exercises at Richland High School mark the eventful week as 158 seniors receive diplomas in the auditorium at 8:00 p.m. The list includes Adams, Adamson, Jemente, Amos, Anderson, Araiza, Arreola and many others. A Kiwanis Rotary softball clash next week highlights a busy sports slate opening the 1947 season across Pee-Wee, Junior and Girls leagues.
Judge E K Grant supervised eight cases arising from arrests by Constable Blake Witcher. Farmers Jack Nevarov paid a 200 fine for damaging a road with irrigation water. W J Copenhaver received 90 days for assaulting his son. T J Badgwell fined 25 for intoxication. Claud Redwine and Thomas Jones got 30 days each for drunk and disturbing the peace. Bill Jones received a suspended 30 days for disturbing the peace. Joseph Higgins jailed 30 days on a bench warrant. Henry Pinaud escaped from the Industrial Road Camp. Practice games in Shafter prep for season with Kiwanis Rotary teams, three-game series to determine 1947 softball champions. admission 50 cents adults, 25 cents children, proceeds to local boy scout troops.
The California Highway Patrolmen's Association hosts its fourth annual rodeo at the Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield. Comic bull fighting steer roping and bronc busting highlight a weekend event with proceeds aiding CHP relatives. Admission is 1.50 for adults and 0.75 for children. Saturday 7:30 PM Sunday 1:30 PM.
County Health Department reports two polio deaths and fourteen county cases with two incidents in Shafter. Officials warn that polio can mimic other illnesses and urge strict rest for any ill child, immediate medical call for stiff neck and headache, and careful control of food milk and water to prevent spread.
This Friday and Saturday mark the annual Poppy Days in downtown, with Auxiliary members and Camp Fire girls selling handmade red poppies. No fixed price. donations support child welfare, rehabilitation, and education programs of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Seventy students will graduate from Shafter High School on Thursday May 29. Baccalaureate services are Sunday May 25 at the nanite Church with Rev. John Bartel giving the sermon. The Mennonite choir provides music and four seniors will give speeches on topics like What Is the Atomic Age and Education For The New Age. The ceremonies, in the high school gym, begin at eight. Two veterans, Ralph Browner and Jack Musick, graduate under army GED work.
Ted French, a local butcher, opens Five Points Market tomorrow at 5 Points on Shafter Avenue south of the big intersection. The store features up-to-date refrigeration for meats and frozen foods and offers a complete line of foods and Grade A meats in a remodeled modern building on the west side of Shafter Avenue 50 feet south of the Five Points corner.
The Speed Grill grand opening in Shafter offers free ice cream cones all day. Owners Robert Simmons and Dwight Sorrell will serve cones to all ages. The eatery sits east of the tracks on Central Avenue beside Shafter Car and Home Supply in the Klassen Building.
The new ultra modern refrigeration equipment was supplied by Lambs Restaurant and Market Equipment Company and installed by Orvilles Refrigeration Service of Bakersfield. Plumbing and electrical work were completed by Loewen Plumbing and Electric Shop of Shafter.
The Shafter 20-30 club completed plans for its Pre-Harvest dance set for Saturday May 31 at the Woman's Club House. Proceeds support the annual kiddies Christmas party for local youngsters. Jerry Adams and his orchestra provide the music with potato sack decorations highlighting the harvest motif. Greg Malory chairs the event with Merv Schirmer as president and others handling advertising prizes and refreshments.
Invitations go to all Kern County communities to sponsor contestants for the Miss Kern County Beauty Contest at Bakersfield Melody Bowl this Friday. Myrle Royal from Shafter competes after a Shafter High School coronation ball runner-up showing, as judges from local press and civic leaders select the winner who advances to Miss California and Miss America pageants.
Three sets of blank check books were stolen from sheds in Delano on the night of Saturday May 17. The checks listed include Mettler & Bender First National Bank Delano numbers 30 to 200, D F Mettler First National Bank Delano numbers 120 to 300, and Al Bender First National Bank Delano numbers 301 to 600.
Week end cases before Judge F G Shaw Monday include Jackson Turman of Shafter charged with drunkenness. He received a 25 dollar fine and a 30 day suspended sentence for two years. William A Osteen, a second offense, was fined 50 dollars and given a 60 year sentence. Lawrence Frazier of Wasco on a second offense was fined 100 dollars and given a 90 day suspended sentence for two years. Bradley Lee Henry on first offense was fined 35 dollars and given a 30 day suspended sentence for two years. Dave Koehn was fined 50 dollars with a 60 day suspended sentence for two years on the charge of being drunk, his second offense.
Mr and Mrs James M Bradshaw welcomed a son James Cecil born May 13 at Wasco weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces. Mr and Mrs Bob Talbert welcomed a daughter Janis Ann born May 10 weighing 8 pounds 5? ounces. Grandparents are D Talbert and George Schreiner. Alfred Wedel announced a son born May 17 at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield weighing 7 pounds 12? ounces.
Mr and Mrs William Guenther of San Luis Obispo were hosted by Mr and Mrs P Guenther as recent house guests.
