Shafter plans a Spud n Cotton Festival to celebrate its status as cotton center and world spud capital. Local groups back the event with support from the American Legion amid a strong community spirit and pride in farming, horses, wagons, grapes, sugar beets, and livestock.
Myrle Royal, a young Shafter beauty, was chosen to represent Shafter in the finals of Miss Kern County to be held May 23 at the Melody Bowl Bakersfield. A preview occurred at Sam Lynn Park before the Bakersfield San Jose game with contestants modeling in bathing suits and speaking brief remarks. The winner earns an all expense paid trip to Santa Cruz to compete for Miss California next month.
Mrs. Christine Roscamp hosted weekend guests for Mother's Day. Her guests from Los Angeles were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Muttart and their son, and from Cuyama were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Roscamp and family.
Shafter’s 1947 potato season winds down with 11 of 21 sheds operating and shipments around 70 cars daily. By Wednesday 188 cars shipped. Chris Handel and Poznoff sheds opened Tuesday. Final practice schedules set for the last two weeks before games begin on June 2, with leagues including Junior Pee-Wee and Girls. A Kiwanis Rotary game May 27 to support local Boy Scouts draws a big crowd.
The local legion hall hosts a Monday night meeting at 8 p.m. Commander Tip Henderson presides. Sam Lachenmaier presents outdoor motion pictures, with two or three films planned. Officer nominations close at this session. elections occur at the next meeting.
Mrs Ruth Handel was seated as Junior Women's Club president Wednesday evening at the Woman's Club house by installing officer Mrs Art Craig. An candle light service marked the ceremony. Other officers installed were Barit Pipkin vice president Elsie Mettler treasurer Corrine Mettler corresponding secretary and Maxine Albright recording secretary.
A Remington Noiseless port able typewriter Model 7 belonging to Jack Manweiler director of the North Shafter Farm Labor Center was stolen from Manweiler s car Monday. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of this typewriter is asked to phone 626.
The Minter Field housing project hinges on enough applications to show need for veterans housing. If insufficient, the conversion of Minter Field buildings will not proceed. Blank forms are available at the Shafter Press or the Veterans' Service Center in the office of Jack Hare Inc.
The first graduation class of Maple School received diplomas on Thursday with Paul D. Wiebe presenting. Honorees include Wardell Brady Stanley Buller Pearl Pauline Carter and many others. program featured Reverend J W Bruner principal R E Gribble and promising musical selections by the Maple School band and choirs.
A building permit for a 5000 dollar service station was issued Wednesday to the Navy Oil Company for a triangular lot at Lerdo James and State Streets. A. J. Rogers of Navy Oil’s Bakersfield office will supervise construction as E. K. Grant, the Building Inspector, reports.
Elder John Baerg of the Seventh Day Adventist church shared seven years of missionary experience in Brazil at the Kiwanis club luncheon at Cawelo Motel. He described Brazil’s major cities Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, the Amazon River, and displayed a jaguar hide and a 20 foot snake skin.
The Shafter Public Utilities Board scheduled a 2:00 p.m. meeting led by chairman Glen Nay with A H Jessup of Quenton Engineers to review sewage facilities. A February 1946 survey showed a 25 percent increase over the prior year and loads at two and a half times normal capacity, with plans for a new plant and lines to handle current and future growth. A two week survey release is expected, guiding next steps and potential pipe and plant upgrades.
Shafter City Council voted Monday night to implement a new percent cent city sales tax effective July 1. Final adoption is set for the May 26 meeting, with Bakersfield and Delano already adopting similar measures in Kern County. The proposal, endorsed by the merchants committee of Schirmer Weil and Brown, seeks funds for street improvements and police protection, arguing current property taxes and license fees are already high. The measure passed unanimously. mayor J. W. Frizzell and councilors Kirschenmann McClure Lachenmaier Nay supported it. A parallel parking petition on Central Avenue between Walker and Kern streets was tabled for next meeting.
Shafter opens Speed Grill in the Klassen building on Central Avenue East of the tracks with a grand opening offering free ice cream cones to everyone all day. The new fountain lunch center, run by two ex-GI’s from Crawfordsville Indiana, aims to welcome locals and potato workers after spud season.
The Tuesday Rotary barbecue attracted about 115 attendees. Jack Battaglia provided the seasoned lamb and Charlie West secured the meat. Beans were prepared by Bob Neuman Earl Johnson Ralph Janzen and John Reily supplied tables chairs and eating gear for a smooth event.
A rummage sale sponsored by the Business and Professional Women will be held tomorrow Saturday from 9:00 a.m. at the Sam Lachenmaier Real Estate and Insurance office on Central Avenue. Proceeds go to charitable causes. items may be dropped off tonight or tomorrow morning with pickup arrangements by calling 874.
A group of 25 men from the Mennonite Brethren Church will join the Bakersfield chorus for the Pacific Coast Conference singing concert in Fresno on Sunday. The ensemble will be directed by Chester Hayden, Delano High School music instructor.
