Carter's Work Commended In Air Service Engine Overhaul
Cpl. Roy L. Carter of Shafter and fellow technicians at an Air Service Command depot in England overhauled their 2 500th Packard Rolls Royce engine. A Packard Motor Co. cablegram hailed the feat as leading the depot by 1500 engines, cutting overhaul time from 500 to 300 hours and boosting service time from 90 to 200 hours. Carter, husband of Mrs Roberta E Carter, left Bakersfield after joining the armed forces in September 1942.

Kern County Tax Rate Up
Kern County's general tax rate rises to 1.18 per 100, up 20 cents from 0.98 for 1943-44.
