Miss Dorothy Miller a 21 year old Shafter teacher drowned Sunday afternoon at the Kern River mouth near the Edison plant. Murray Arnold who tried to rescue her barely escaped a rock strewn undertow as Sheriff Champness led a search. Miller a San Jose graduate had lived in Shafter four months teaching at Richland school.

Kern county high school students dominated the Kern Kings Tulare division of the San Joaquin Valley home project competition. Final awards show Kern capturing 14 firsts 12 seconds and seven thirds. Bakersfield led county entrants with nine firsts one second and four thirds. Shafter tallied four firsts two seconds and two thirds while Wasco had one first and eight seconds. McFarland trailed with one second and one third. County winners include Shafter William Schultz first in crops one acre or less and James Russell Bakersfield third in the same category. Shafter’s Raymond Mettler third in over one acre crops. Wasco’s Loren Voth second in vines. Bakersfield’s Gus Harris first in sheep production and George Dean first in beef production with Herbert Wolley second in Wasco. Shafter High School plans new $28,000 shop building
Bakersfield architect E J Symmes presented plans approved by Kern County Union High School trustees for a new shop and study hall to serve over 200 students at Shafter High. State approval and bids will follow, with construction hoped to start by July 1 and completion targeted for September. Ray Peters, 20, died at Kern County General Hospital after a four or five day illness. He had moved to Shafter last fall from Pryor Oklahoma and worked locally. His sister and brother in Shafter have since returned to Oklahoma with his body.

Funeral Service for W L Hetz Held at Local Church
