Good Old Days Meat Price Paradox

The piece argues that although nominal meat prices rose, the time needed to earn money for a pound of pork or beef fell since 1919. It claims improved production, marketing, and retailing kept meat’s purchasing power near a bargain level despite inflation.

Hard To Break Even In 1939 To 2024 Purchasing Power

A survey shows a $5,000 yearly income in 1939 with a wife and two children equals $12,113 in today’s buying power. A man earning $7,035 now buys what a $3,000 earner did then. Taxes and inflation drive the loss of dollars, shrinking purchasing power.

Reduction of oil depletion allowance sparks congressional debate

The piece argues to cut the depletion allowance from 27 1/2 percent to a reduced rate, contending the policy is vital for oil producers to fund drilling and maintain supply. It claims the program fosters risk-taking in exploration and counters high costs, while stressing the aid is aimed at producers, not refiners. It warns that cutting the incentive could threaten U.S. energy security and prices, citing a Bureau of Mines view of $3 spent per $1 deducted. The Port Gibson Reveille notes France and Britain shifting toward conservatism and urges the U.S. to avoid socialist temptations.
