Registration for next year’s kindergarten opens as authorities plan class assignments. The notice explains age requirements, birth certificates, and early stalled enrollment to streamline the process.
A locally filmed health movie will be shown in the primary school cafe torium at 7:30 p.m. A change in meeting place was announced for the organization. Music will be provided by schol winners in the Saturday contest, and hostesses will be the one and first grade room.
Janet Klingenberg of Maple 4-H Club wins the junior trophy in Kern County Dress Revue competition. Nancy Ashford, senior at McFarland High School, earns state finals berth with beige wool coat and dress. Maple girls Sharon Regina Kathy Patterson Marilyn Schellenberg Janice Broom Sally Franz Dorothy Kliewer Karin Crigger Leela Kliewer Carolyn Broom Linda Davis Janice Schultz Shirley Caldwell receive seals or reds for workmanship.
H. C. Hight owner of Budget Food Mart thanks Shafter Press readers for their strong response and credits steady advertising for early success. He notes a major promotional month ahead featuring a drawing offering a sewing machine and vacuum cleaner plus 600 additional prizes, with drawing date May 16th and no purchase required.
The Kern County Planning Commission will review seven Shafter and Baron plans at its May 25 meeting, around 8 30 p m. The Shafter Plan nears completion and staff will host review sessions for clubs and organizations in coming weeks.
Plans for the Holy Name Society of St. Therese's Church to hold its annual steak barbecue on May 21. Event begins at 5 p.m. at Shafter county park. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1.50 for children, available from society members.

Rio Bravo PTA President Mrs. John Walker announced the California Congress of Parents and Teachers Sixtieth National Convention in Los Angeles May 6 7 and 8. First Vice President Mrs. Robert Haag and Hospitality Chairman Mrs. Aron Smith will join Seventh PTA delegates from Bakersfield traveling by chartered bus. State President Mrs. Martha L. Snowden will preside at general sessions at Shrine Auditorium with the convention theme We Expand Our Circles of Cooperation.
Forty one Shafter area students from Shafter High Richland Rio Bravo and Lerdo will be honored for scholastic achievement at a Thursday night banquet. Local leaders and organizations sponsor the event with Jim Nikkel as speaker noted for his Navy service and Deep Freeze experience.
The outlined program includes five Pee Wee teams and six Low Pee Wee teams with practice games May 18 to 29 and league start June 2. Umpires scorekeepers and rules will be set at a May 7 meeting led by Hal Williams. Rio Bravo members Jack Thompson Dave Anderson Gay Pare Art Johnson Darrel Swan attended the meeting with Roy Farrell to assign players into six baseball teams this summer.
