River holds buried treasure in Mississippi sweepstakes
River historian Porter Young says the Mississippi is stacked with wrecks and buried gold. Prominent ships like the Sultana sank in 1865 with vast gold losses and many lives, while other wrecks lie along cutoffs and meanders. He notes recovery is hard but a shovel dig might still pay in places, drawing many hopeful diggers.
