Public ceremonies Thursday May 13 at 10 30 a m will mark California’s population center on the north side of the town. Shafter High School band directed by Mike Hutchinson will play at 10 15 a m. Pacini will lead the pledge of allegiance followed by an invocation by Monsignor Seamus Mullan. Speakers include Trice Harvey and representatives from Buttonwillow Shafter Taft Wasco chambers of commerce and the Bureau of Census Kern County. The event honors the decennial population center designation by the Census Bureau and local officials.

Police arrest trio after traffic stop in Shafter
Late Sunday night police took three men into custody after a traffic stop at Kern and Pacific.
