Shafter’s American Legion Auxiliary unit 213 urges wearing a memorial poppy on Memorial Day May 27 to honor those who died serving in wars from World War I to the ongoing War on Terrorism. The poppy symbolizes sacrifice and remembrance, a tradition since 1921.
Beverly Enterprises plans a Shafter Advisory Council to gather input on nursing care and elder services. The panel will include caregivers, advocates, hospital reps, business and community leaders, and academia to guide quality improvements and public seminars on Elder Abuse Alzheimer's Medicare and related benefits.
Rosie Wiens passed away peacefully on May 5, 2002 at age 82. Graveside services were held May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Shafter Memorial Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church at 11 a.m. Remembrances directed to Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church.
Kern County veterans from all areas join a Shafter event featuring Korean War artifacts and a Veterans Panel. Displays include an F-86 Sabrejet and MIG-15, once foes in the 1950s air battles. Shafter City and Minter Field Airport District partner with Kiwanis to provide breakfast and lunch.
