The Shafter and Wasco Cemeteries request visitors not bring flowers before noon on Friday May 24 to allow groundsmen time to prepare for Memorial Day weekend activities. The Cemetery District thanks supporters and wishes everyone a safe holiday.
The tradition ties white carnations to mothers who have passed, red to living mothers, and yellow to grieving mothers. Observances recall early Mother’s Day beginnings in Virginia in 1908, national adoption by 1914, and a 1914 Wilson proclamation urging displays of love for mothers. American literary voices celebrate maternal influence and guidance.
Margaret Baker and Lucy Garcia are highlighted as cooks at the Walker Center. Baker is acclaimed for skill and leadership while Garcia is noted for passion in cooking and positive contributions to the center’s kitchen programs.
Shafter High School presents Schoolhouse Rock Alive a musical directed by Brian Livesind with Tom Mizer portrayed by David Mack. Performances begin Friday at 7 30 p m at the school theater featuring songs like Conjunction Junction Just a Bill and Three is a Magic Number. Adults $5 students $3 tickets on sale now, with a family friendly show inviting later audience interaction with the cast on stage.
Rosie Jewel Unruh Wiens born March 14, 1920 near Shafter spent life on the same farm. She taught 41 years at Richland Elementary from 1949 to 1990 and sang in church groups for decades. A warbirds event at Minter Field Museum in Shafter resumes after a hiatus with a Korean War anniversary salute.
