The California Newspaper Publishers Association approved a six column front page format at its February annual meeting noting readership and display advantages. The Christian Science Monitor is cited as a six column exception for news while ads stay eight columns. A special festival tabloid section for the 1974 Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival is produced by the Press staff with 1500 copies donated by the Shafter Kiwanis Club and sold as a complete rodeo program for a dime.

Record Warm July Start in Shafter Hits 92 Degrees
Shafter residents sampled July weather as the Mercer sun pushed the temperature to 92 degrees, with nightly lows 46 to 57. The 92 degree high on Tuesday set a new seasonal record while daily highs reached 79 or higher at the USDA Cotton Research Station observatory.

Richland trustees seek legal action over Scott appointment
Richland School District trustees directed Superintendent Ev ron Barber to study possible legal action against a statewide committee after an executive session. The move followed granting junior high math teacher R Jackson Scott three extra days of leave to attend a credentials committee meeting, with concerns over not being consulted about his appointment and how it affects the district. Barber will consult County Council Ralph Jordan and possibly a private attorney. The board also discussed a 1974 75 compensation package, approving an eight percent raise with seven percent as a pay hike and one percent for employee and family medical benefits, and voted to allow a retired employee to remain.

West Lordo Hwy vacant apartment gutted by fire
Shafter fire crews responded to a 3:06 p.m. alarm on Thursday to find a vacant apartment at 175 West Lerdo fully involved. Four firefighters and seven volunteers battled the blaze for 15 minutes, controlling it and saving an estimated $4,500 with $1,550 in losses. An adjoining unit was undamaged.

Festival parade entry list announced for Saturday in Shafter
